Small Home Decorating, Reasons Why I Love Raising My Family in a Small Home!

My goal as a writer is to spread as much knowledge as I can about positive thinking and pro-active living.

In 1960 the average size of a home was about 1200 square feet. These days the average size home is about 2300 square feet. Many say that the American dream during the 1960s was to pay off your home, during this day in age the goal of paying off your home for some is almost impossible.

I live in a home that is only 1050 square feet with my husband, two children, and dog. My children are only 5 years old and seven month's old. Many of my friends and family members keep telling my husband and I that we need to buy a bigger house. Our mortgage is paid off and to be honest with you, our little family is very comfortable in our small home. We love the small home lifestyle and I would like to share why.

1. It's fast and easy to clean

One of my favorite things about small home living is how is easy and fast it is for me to clean my entire home. It only takes me about an hour to deep clean my entire house, over time that is a substantial amount of extra hours in my life that I have to spend with my children and do the things I love.

2. I tend to buy less stuff

I am constantly walking through peoples homes and seeing how much junk they accumulate and don't even use. Their unneeded stuff takes up a lot of space, money. and time cleaning and organizing it.

There is not a lot of space in my small home for unneeded stuff so I tend to buy high quality items that serve a purpose. In addition to that, my husband and I are always DE cluttering to make space in our small home which brings an incredible sense of freedom to our lives.

3. Living in a small home helps us save money for the important things in life

Overall small homes cost a lot less to maintain. They have smaller property taxes, electric and water bills, and home repair bills. All of that extra money can be put aside to save for retirement, college, and cherished family vacations.

4. Large homes take time and skill to decorate

Let's face it large homes are a little overwhelming for the average person to decorate. I love my small home because I can make it a "jewel box house." I can pay attention to every nook and cranny of my home and decorate and organize it to the fullest.

5. Living in small homes helps us enjoy our outdoor space more

Being that the space in my home is limited I make sure my family utilizes our outdoor space as much as possible. In order to avoid claustrophobia I feel that my family is forced to go outside in the fresh air for barbeques, water balloon fights, and building snowmen little more than the average family living in a large home.

My views on small home living might change as my two children get older and need more privacy. Nevertheless, right now it is working out beautifully. My values are very different from many people in my social circle.

The main reason I am writing my blog on the Hubpages is to share my experience on small home living with as many readers as I can. During this blog I am going to be talking about organizational projects geared to towards small home living as well as product and publication reviews centered around small home living as well. I look forward to sharing my experience of allowing the smallness of my home to bring my family closer together and embracing it!

Where'd you find that curved cabinet/closet?

That is a great space saver in a small bedroom!

My house is 900 sq ft with a 200 sq ft low ceiling attic space. One bathroom actually works okay for now!

That is such a cute home. I just love it from the outside.

We live in 1100 square feet and feel it is too large. One day we want two acres with a home about 700 square feet. That will be heaven on earth for us.

Your home looks delightful, very charming. Small homes are not unusual here in the UK, where there is less land for property development - making it an expensive commodity. My house is quite small but I confess that I would like a little more space - mostly for entertaining and for hobbies.

It really is surprising how little space we actually needed to feel that we still have our own 'space.' All the things you say about large homes and 'stuff' is so true. I clean houses on the side and the two I clean are HUGE. One of them has a lot of space but the lady of the space has pared down here stuff to essentials basically. The other one is filled in an attractive way with many treasures and many items that are not essential for sure. But I suppose if it makes the family happy to know they will leave these treasures behind to their loved ones, then it is all good. My home is not large by any means ...maybe 1100 sq. feet...but it is just me so it is quite fine.

Angels are on the way to you this morning ps
