One of the most versatile tools you will ever own is a compound miter saw, which is why if you are a serious woodworkers have one. They are certainly worth the cost since making a compound cut often is difficult if you don’t have one. Trying to be a woodworker without a miter saw is difficult, so it should be among the first power tools you buy.

For the most part the kind of miter saw that you choose is going to be decided by how much you can afford to invest and how serious you are about woodworking. You normally get your moneys worth when it comes to buying a miter saw. According to the size and the quality of the saw that you buy there can be a significant difference in cost. Selecting the best saw that your budget will allow is in general the best advice. This will make certain that you get the most benefit out of this incredibly useful tool.

Usually there are three standard sizes of compound miter saw, eight, ten and twelve inches. When we speak about the size of a miter saw we are really speaking about the size of the blade. The larger the blade the bigger the piece of wood it can cut. The eight inch saw is very limited when it comes to what you can do with it so even though there are three sizes of miter saw available only the larger two are worthy of serious consideration. Which means that you are going to have to choose between the ten and twelve inch versions. In most cases ten inches is sufficient, few woodworkers are likely to come across a piece of wood that is going to need a larger the saw.

Whether or not to get a standard miter saw, a compound miter saw or a sliding compound miter saw is the other major factor to think about. The standard miter saw has so many limitations in what it can do that it is hardly worth buying since it can only cut miters. The compound miter saw is substantially more capable because it is able to cut both miters and bevels. The sliding compound miter saw offers the advantage of being able to cut larger pieces of wood since you can pull the saw through the wood after it has been lowered. As you progress from the standard miter saw to the compound miter saw to the sliding compound miter saw the cost goes up of course. At a minimum you should probably buy a compound miter saw but this is largely a matter of personal preference.
