Sherwin Williams Duration Paint Review

Updated on July 17, 2012

Is Duration Worth the Money?

Sherwin Williams Duration paint is for exterior application and there's also Duration Home, which is an interior paint. Both paints are considered to be some of the best Sherwin Williams house paints you can get. I have painted homes with both paints.

Duration Exterior House Paint

The cost is the biggest drawback. You are looking at spending roughly $55 per gallon for Sherwin Williams Duration paint. One five gallon bucket of Duration costs a whopping $275. if you need 10 gallons to paint a larger home, the cost is $550 before tax.

The upside though is that the paint truly is durable and you get what you pay for, but only if you take the time to thoroughly clean and prepare the surface before slapping a coat of paint on it. A new coat of paint is worthless if the surface it's painted on is filthy and unprepared.

If you plan to live in your home for a long time and you want to minimize the long-term costs of repainting the exterior, Duration is a wise home investment. Duration dries very hard and stretches over the substrate like a plastic film, reducing the chances of cracks and peeling.

Another major advantage is that the paint is self-priming and doesn't require a primer when painted on top of a previously painted surface (bare wood still needs oil primer/sealer first, do not use Duration as a primer on bare wood outside). If you are painting Sherwin Williams Duration over a painted surface, you won't have to buy separate primers. The paint also provide one-coat coverage in some cases when the colors are similar. You can probably get away with one coat for white over white, but two coats is best in my book.

I have painted some exteriors with Duration, but I don't use it very often, mainly because it's too expensive, especially for a big paint job. One thing I don't like about the paint, besides the cost, is that it dries fast during application, so you really have to make an effort to keep your paint brush inside the can and out of the direct sunlight, otherwise it will turn into concrete.

Duration does cover really well and it will endure through extreme temperatures. It is also backed by a lifetime warranty that guarantees the product won't crack or blister. I don't recommend the paint for contractors, due to the cost. It would be hard to get steady business providing estimates using Duration paint.

If you can't afford the price, your next best option is Sherwin Williams exterior SuperPaint. I use it on all my exterior painting jobs because it's also very durable and costs less than $45 per gallon.

Duration Home Interior Paint

Duration Home is a low voc paint ideal for steamy bathrooms and kids rooms that tend to get a lot of fingerprints and dirt marks on the wall. The paint is formulated to prevent wall and ceiling mildew when painted in bathrooms. The matte and satin paint finishes are also durable enough to allow wall cleaning without ruining the painted surface.

Similar to exterior Duration paint, Duration Home is also expensive and costs about $48 per gallon, but if you're only painting one small bathroom, you will probably only need to buy 1 gallon.

The low voc formula is one thing I really like about Duration Home. It does have a noticeable odor at first, but it doesn't last long. If you are painting a kids room and you prefer a zero voc paint that doesn't have any fumes whatsoever, I highly recommend ProMar 200 or Harmony as an alternative. Both are great zero voc Sherwin Williams paints.

I have noticed that Duration Home is also great for touch-ups. Touching it up with a brush or small roller won't leave marks on walls. I have only used Sherwin Williams Duration Home a few times. I painted my newly remodeled bathroom with it and I have also used it to paint an entire home. I was happy with the results and I'm a professional painter.
