Single Mom Survival Guide

Updated on January 28, 2011

Many single mothers find themselves in that position by no fault of their own. Some actually make a conscious decision to be single, and some are left high and dry by the person they thought was the love of their life. Being a single mother is not easy however; providing your children with a strong foundation for growth and development is highly important. It can be difficult without a partner to support you but, as a single mother you have to develop strength of character and learn to be the best that you can be for your children.

Learn to Love Yourself

Being a single mother can knock your self esteem. But you shouldn't let it destroy you, a depressed, stressed out mother cannot effectively take care of her child. Therefore, it is important to learn to love yourself. It all starts in the mind, love yourself within and then you will learn to love yourself on the outside. Tell yourself on a daily basis that you love yourself. Tell yourself that you are unique, beautiful, intelligent, talented and that you can achieve anything that you put your mind to. Soon enough you will start to believe it.

Take your focus away from another relationship

You don't have to remain single for the rest of your life because you have a child. However; do not rush into another relationship out of boredom or loneliness. Take your focus away from starting another relationship and put that focus into loving your child and loving yourself. Use the time you are single to concentrate on bettering yourself as a person.

Do fun activities with your children

There are so many things you could do to have fun with your children. It will not only take your mind off other things but, it will also help your children develop, learn and grow. Here are a few ideas.

  • The park
  • The museum
  • Art Gallery
  • Theme park
  • Swimming
  • Craft classes
  • Art at home
  • Movies
  • Walks
  • Baking
There are a plethora of things you could do with your children. Plan events and outings, and teach your children to live life to the fullest. Once you start getting out and about you will start to realise that life does not revolve around being in  a relationship. Not to say that every single mother wants to be in a relationship but, sometimes you just have to accept the here and now and enjoy what you have. Enjoy your children and put all your love into them.
Join a mothers group/ get a hobby
As much as it is great to put the focus into your loving your children. You sholuld also consider getting a hobby or finding like minded people who share your experiences.; Find something to do outside of the home that does not necessarily involve your children. Take time out for yourself. It might not always be possible to leave your children in daycare or find a babysitter, but it you can, do it!
Sort out your finances Not all single mothers will have this problem. But, if you are a single mother who is struggling financially and living from pay check to pay check. Or, if you are struggling on welfare, start thinking of ways to boost your income. Start learning other ways of making money and maximising your money. Even if your children's father is helping you financially, put something away for your children's future. You can make money online if you are not working because of illness. There are so many ways of making money online, you just have to go out and search. Here are a few ideas.
  • Online writing
  • Selling on Amazon
  • Selling on eBay
  • Paid to Click
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Online tuition
There are a wide range of things you can do to just make a bit of extra money. You don't have to be a genius to make money online. Making extra money can not only take the stress off your shoulders but, it can also provide you with future security. So, start making some extra money today.
Think positive and the best that you can be
Some people underestimate the power of positive thought. Never underestimate it because it works. The more you think positive and believe that your life is going to be better the more you will actually start to see changes in your life. You have to make a concious decision to do this though. It can be difficult to think positive all the time, but try your best to do this on a regular basis.  Be the best that you can be, start working out and keeping yourself fit. Be the best version of yourself. If you have always wanted to start your own business, get up and do it. If you have always wanted to own your own home. Get up and do it, now is the time for you to really just take life by the horns and just get on with it. Live life to the fullest and be happy!
Keep the faith and love yourself.
