Easy and Quick Kitchen Cleaning

Updated on July 16, 2014

The Dream Kitchen

Clean the Kitchen

When embarking on the spring cleaning activity, the kitchen keeps staring you in the face. It is by far the most challenging and time consuming job to tackle. And frankly no matter how thorough your spring cleaning in the kitchen maybe it doesn't stay clean for very long. However it is time to dig in and clean from the inside out.

Start with the drawers and cabinets and you can enjoy that wonderful feeling of being organized, for a little while anyway. Knowing where everything is makes cooking much more fun and also saves a lot of time Before you change your mind and put it off for another day get into some comfy clothes and turn on some lively music.

Basic Cleaning Supplies for the Kitchen

You will need:

  • A spray bottle
  • White Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • A lemon
  • Paper towels
  • A microfiber rag
  • Furniture polish

The Vinegar mixture:

Mix equal parts of water and white vinegar with 2 tablespoons of baking soda and juice from a lemon and shake gently in a spray bottle. This formual works for basic cleaning jobs aroundthe house.

Drawers and Pantry

Starting from the inside out is always a good idea. Get the drawers and pantry clean and organized. This is an excellent time to get rid of old kitchen tools that really don't work well or maybe have rusted out. It is also a good time to get rid of things you have not used for a long time.

Empty all the drawers and put the stuff in three piles-thrown outs, give aways and keepers.

Dampen your paper towel with water and spray everything with the vinegar mixture which will clean and sanitize. Dry everything wit a microfiber rag.

Some of your drawers may need some silverware holders which ar excellent for kitchen tools and other odds and ends that you keep in the kitchen. You can separate rubber bands, paper clips, thumb tacks and other miscellaneous items.

The pantry--ah yes the pantry. This is a time consuming event but well worth having organized. While cleaning the pantry I found some food items I had been looking for. Add some new plastic containers to use for opened bags of nuts, pretzels, flour, sugar, rice and other bulk foods. This one job will help you feel very organized.

After everything is removed--you know the drill--spray all the shelves with the vinegar mixture and dry with the microfiber rag. Sweep the floor and go over the floor with a damp paper towel and the vinegar mixture. This mixture will also repel any unwanted visitors--no not unwanted relatives.

So now is the time to put things back. It took me about five minutes to write this section and it will probably take you a few hours to do it. Not fair!

Fridge Inside and Outside

Take everything out of the fridge and freezer and give a complete cleaning with the vinegar mixture. This is a good time to get rid of old forgotten food or gather the veggies and make a soup for dinner. Clean the entire exterior..You may need a step ladder to clean the top and if you can reach the sides clean. If you are feeling ambitious pull the fridge out with some help, mop behind. Wow will you feel like your kitchen is really clean.

All Surfaces in the Kitchen

Remove everything from the counters and set aside. Now is a good time to decide what goes back on the pantry or drawers. Clean the tops with the vinegar mixture. Clean all the small appliances, bowls of fruit, utensil holders and other things you have sitting out. Maybe the coffee pot needs a soaking with vinegar overnight, and the blender looks like it could use a serious cleaning. Spring cleaning is a good time to take care of the details that you miss with daily cleaning.

Don't forget to polish the wood cabinets thoroughly. I usually polish my cabinets about twice a month due to our very dry climate. Anyway, the lemon polish gives a nice sheen and a fresh scent to the kitchen.

Stove inside and outside

Stoves take a lot of abuse in the cleaning department. I have to do my stove everyday due to the style of the cook top. Check the oven and if you have an automatic oven cleaner use it. If the oven is fairly clean just a going over with the vinegar mixture will work. Sometimes it helps if your stove is designed appropriately.to put a piece of foil on the bottom to catch spills. Since every stove is different you will clean accordingly. Love the flat top hobs as they just need a quick swish everyday. If you can, remove all the turning knobs and clean individually and all around with a toothbrush. Clean the microwave with a damp cloth.

Knobs and Faucets

With trusty toothbrush in hand you can clean around all the faucets and knobs Spray a little of the vinegar mixture into the toothbrush and get all the knobs including the stove. Dry and shine them all with the microfiber rag.

The Finale-The Floors

The kitchen is shaping up, and all you have left are the floors. Start out by getting down on the floor with your spray bottle and cleaning all the corners and the edges. Clean those places that may have been neglected for a long time.

With mop in hand and spray bottle of vinegar mixture mop the floors. And pat yourself on the back for a job well done. Your kitchen is thoroughly cleaned till the next time.

  • Do not use vinegar on any marble tops of floor.

      Carol,

You have some really great tips. I like the way you have broken down the task into steps. It is a BIG job but doing a bit at time makes it less daunting.

My most despised of all tasks is oven cleaning so I am thrilled to pieces that I have a self cleaning oven. My oven really does not need to be cleaned more than about once a year because I mainly use my toaster oven so the oven really needs little attention, thank goodness.

It is kind of odd that you posted this today because I am spring cleaning and was doing the kitchen. I have lots of company coming next weekend for my grandson's birthday party. I had the vinegar in full swing today.

      Voted up, Carol and ++++

Good information, Carol. We don't really do a huge cleaning per se, but over the course of the spring we end up doing basically everything you mentioned. I'll be in the mood sometime in March. :)

Well there was a snow storm here so I got the ladder out and wiped down my kitchen walls, woodwork and cabinets. Hand washed the oak floor and put a Future wax on it, I can see my underpants now when I walk through the kitchen. It took me a week, my back was killing me for 3 days. I realize I am too old for this yearly routine Mother taught me, next year I hire someone to do it for me. If you have really good paint on the walls, it makes a difference, much brighter. I used just a little bleach in the water and dish liquid. It smells nice in here now, not bleachy though.

      Hi, Carol!

While I focus mainly on our yard, carport, cars, etc.--anything outdoorsy--I am drafted into honey-do service every now and then. These tips of yours are practical, easy even for a man to remember, and maybe even a source of brownie points with my wife. Thank you for sharing this useful and frugal information. Blessings and aloha from a surprisingly sunny southeast Washington!

You have covered all the nooks and crannies of the kitchen scrub. I, for one, can't wait for warmer weather when I can properly open up and air out my small apartment. I turned the heat off the other day and opened some windows and the slider door for about an hour when the temp outside was in the 40s. I had to put a sweater on, but it felt good to change the air inside. I did a good kitchen scrub too!
