The Step Trash Can: A More Hygenic Option

Updated on September 28, 2011

The Advantages of Step Operation

A step trash can allows you to avoid contact with both the trash can itself and it's contents; it is a very hygienic option thanks to this touchless operation. A step on the pedal opens the lid which then closes automatically. Operation is smooth and quiet. Odors are trapped inside, leaving your room fresh and clean smelling.

Aside from their hands-free operation, you'll also find that smaller ones offer an inner liner that makes cleaning easy. Other features that are frequently offered include a carrying handle, hooks to keep bags in place, a stay open option for when you're in the midst of cooking and cleaning, and rubber bases or pads to help keep them in place and your floors scratch free.

These step trash cans are available in plastic (black or white) as well as stainless finishes. The lids on many of the stainless models are plastic to allow for quieter operation and fewer fingerprints. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes to fit in whatever space you have available.

Cleaning Tips

While a touchless trash can help prevent making contact with food residue, bacteria, and germs, certainly all of this is present within the can. Many of these cans help to prevent the odors created by this residue from escaping into your home, but if proper cleaning doesn't occur, over time odors will become evident.

Using a trash bag to line the bin is important. It reduces the amount of residue that clings to the can itself and doesn't get carried out with the trash. A number of things can help to control odors, from using a bit of baking soda in the trash bag to laying a dryer sheet in the bottom. Of course rinsing out containers (jars/cans) before disposing of them helps and double bagging organic waste (food items) also helps prevent odors. Still nothing beats emptying the trash routinely, and certainly prior to any spillage from overfilling.

Washing out any debris each time the can is emptied will also go along way in promoting a safer and healthier environment as well as keeping things fresh smelling. Periodically using a disinfectant is good as well. The disinfectant should be sprayed or wiped on and left to do it's work for a few minutes before scrubbing or rinsing it clean. Using a long handled brush or perhaps a toilet bowl brush can make the job easier.

I swear these are on my shopping list constantly. I think to myself I need one all of the time...especially when the dogs just walk by and look in the garbage (luckily they leave it alone) but gosh...I'm tired of looking at it myself. lol Perhaps Santa will bring me one for Christmas!

It's been awhile since I had one of these. For some reason...I don't know why - I loved using it. I think it's time for a new one.

Thanks a lot for this reminder. Yay!

These cans are also great for keeping the pests, I mean pets out of the garbage.

We used to have something like this before in our bedroom but my daughter always played with the step so I placed the trash can outside. Unfortunately when it flooded last year, the trash was washed away by the water.

Good information. It's look easy to do, but we have to give attention to the garbage around us. My friend, you come up with solution. Most of these trash cans looks minimalist, modern and good to place in every where, even in private room. Thanks for share with us. Thumbs up for you.
