Landscaping rock

Using decorative stone as landscaping rock design, will certainly bring out the beauty of your garden. Using colourful stone chips in your garden landscape will give it a unique look. Landscaping rock is often used in gardens and is a current trend. As Landscaping rock we may consider thousands of products that can be used in your garden design that will give it a wonderful and distinctive look.

Well, I've been looking at the possibilities product by product, and I figure I can divide everything I know about garden stones into these categories:

  • Chips of stone
  • Rounded Edge Stones
  • Pebbles
  • Dimensional Stones

I have excluded sand and glass chips, which you may also use, however regarding glass chips, be aware that if you have small children it can be harmful.

Chips of stone

In this category we have several types of material marble, granite, limestone, but when dealing with gardens the most interesting characteristic is it's colour. When we refer to chips we have a big range in sizes from sand like size to stone (10 cm), and each size gives you a different garden design.

With the different colours available you can do almost anything. You have to design you garden and look for the right materials for the job. For example, last weekend I seen something really cool in a rotunda, it simulated a river, the decor used mostly rock chips and some dimensional stones, and the river was made up of coloured glass with mirror chips, the sparkles from the mirror chips simulated the sun hitting the water. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture of it, but I thought that was a great idea.

Rounded edge Stone

The base colours of these stones are the same as the chips, sometimes just bigger in size. The rounded edge is obtained by friction between the stone chips and abrasives. You can actually do this at home, just find and old cement mixer and add you stone chips, then as abrasive find something harder than you stone, like river pebbles or granite. Turn it on, add some water to avoid dust and you got an instant rounding edge machine.

These are natural round edge stones, also called river stones. I've seen them in 3 finishes natural, waxed and varnished. And you can find them in several colours, maybe not as many as the chips, but black, white, grey, brownish is very frequent.

Dimensional Stones

Dimensional stones are big stones normally cut at the bottom so they can stand, some people want a hole in the bottom to fix the stone to their garden base. They can be 30-50 cm high or wide, some are bigger than a man standing, others are small and wide, it's a question of design an picking the right one.

The stones have more or less the same origin of the chips, but are much bigger, heavier to move around. So if you plan to use dimensional stones in your garden, don't forget the logistics part of it ... getting the right stone to the right place in the right position, you may even need a crane if the stone is bulky.

Most of the colourful chips are marble, the wonderful thing about marble, is it variety in colour, you can find so many colours and the marble chip industry has just about every size. These big dimensional stones are brought directly from the quarrie and sometimes they're very unique pieces.

Choosing the best design for your lanscape, will certainly improve your gardens unique look. Consider lanscaping stone as a potential garden solution when design and uniqueness is involved.
