Summer Style Room Decorating Tips

Updated on July 6, 2012

Styling for Summer

Changing your home decor to reflect the seasons can be easy fun! This summer, make your home atmosphere feel bright and cheerful! It doesn't take a lot of work to make a design functional. Changing several key elements in the room can do a world of change in just minutes!

No doubt there are pillows in your living room. One of the easiest ways to change your home to reflect the season is by changing out the pillows or the pillow cases. Add colors that are full of life. Greens, corals, and turquoise are very popular for summer. Pick fun patterns that liven up the room. Do the same for the other seasons. Making your own pillow case for a throw pillow is easy!

You need a sewing machine and about 2 yards of fabric per pillow, (allow more or less depending on the size, but for a standard throw pillow, two yards is plenty.

Fold the fabric in half inside out, with the faded part on the outside. Outline your pillow with pencil or chalk, leaving about 1/2 and inch to an inch of space along the side, depending on your skills with the sewing machine. I give myself a little extra room because I'm not a very accomplished sewer.

Run the fabric through the sewing machine, leaving about a hands length of room so you can stuff the pillow in the case. Sew to close with butterfly stitches, or leave the entire bottom open and secure with a button. Just make sure to hem the edges.

(Or you can buy summer pillows and skip the sewing, or find a friend that can sew!)

Accessories are you Best Friend

Like with clothing, your rooms need accessories as well. Fresh flowers are always an easy way to spruce up a room, or some summer themed decorations. I like to use lanterns, bright candles, and fun pictures of summer to bring my rooms into the season.

This DIY project is really easy. The picture featured is a bit nautical for me, but I've taken the same concept and used a different color palette do feature my vases.

You just need vases, floating candles, pebbles, shells, or vase filling marbles, and some food coloring and water!

Arrange the pebbles at the bottom and add the water and food coloring until you reach your desired shade. I love light green and coral for this.

Arrange on a table and you're done!

Summer is also a great time to utilize your porch and back patio! Colorful designs like striped pillows with teal accessories and a bright throw rug make this porch summer ready!

I'm getting very into pillows these days, especially since I realized if I buy them with zippers I can switch them out with the seasons. Very pretty summer selection you've made here.
