      Great information. It would be interesting to see some case studies or examples that showed when things paid off and when they didn't.

      It's unfortunate that home appraisals use comps as a way to help determine value. All too often I have heard of people upgrading their homes beyond the level of the community that it resides in. When a home becomes the most expensive in the neighborhood, it's difficult to get more value out of it by adding additional upgrades.

      Interesting topic for a hub. I think that this is a great list of home upgrades that people do carefully. All are okay upgrades but will only add value to the house in moderation. There is no need to go for the best with any of these as there would be for something like a new roof or windows.

      This is a great list with many excellent tips for how to avoid putting more into your home than it's worth. From having spent over 15 years in the new-home and remodeling industry as a supplier, I can say with some level of certainty that adding energy-related upgrades to your home, i.e., added insulation, thermal windows and doors, and energy-efficient appliances, will more than pay for themselves for both current owners and by adding relevant resale value.
