Joe woke up early on a Monday morning. In his bare feet he ran to the cellar to check on his home made wine. His wife Lena was cooking flap jacks for her family which was her husband Joe, and their child baby Sue. And older son Micheal, and an older daughter Mary had already left early to catch their school bus.

Joe was a construction Boss. He , and his crew of two hundred men were repairing the Brooklyn bridge, and when they were finished with that project they were going to work on the Statue of Liberty because it needed repair work too.

Lena asked Joe if he wanted diet syrup , or regular syrup for his flap jacks. Baby Sue giggled at her mommy, and pointed straight at her from a high chair and said, " Mommy you're silly. " Baby Sue knew her daddy loved sweet syrup on his flap jacks , the kind with the better tasting sugar in it.

Someone started knocking at the door. The family dog , a very big hefty sized Bull Master named Boiler Maker growled , waking up from his light nap next to baby Sue's high chair . Boiler Maker wasted no time at barreling for the door.

Lena said, " Get back under the table dog, it's only Sam."

Baby Sue said, " Doggy eat door mommy."

Lena yelled, " I'm coming Sam!" Sam was one of Joe's closest friend's , and foreman. Sometimes he would visit Joe early , and have a flap jack or two, with some of Lena's fresh brewed dark roast coffee with his boss Joe, and the family.

Boiler Maker scooted under the table , and settled right back beside baby Sue's high chair. Joe opened the door , and Sam smiled , and said , " That dog of you'res could truly sober a judge ."

Joe responded by saying, " Well I suppose our little doggy could spark fear in a restless soul, but don't wirry Sam because the dog knows you . Come in , and join us for a few quick bites because soon you, and I will be on our way to the bridge ."

Sam grabbed a chair, and wasted no time in reaching for a fork , and fixing himself up some buttered flap jacks with syrup with strawberry jelly . He looked straight at baby Sue, and said, " Good morning little darling how are you today ? " Sam knew that baby Sue was still learning how to say little things, but he could not resist talking to the little sweet pea.

Baby Sue was all tickled to see Mr. Sam so she slung a nice sized glob of pineapple flavored baby food mixed with her very own personal slobber right at him, and Sam ducked , and said " Wow that was a close one ," as the moist glob stuck to Lena's hair . Boiler maker raised one eyebrow as baby Sue started banging her spoon on her high chair.

Joe said, " I guess that answers you're question. "

The two fathers left for work after breakfast. The crew was already on the site. Traffic was busy so some men from the work crew directed traffic on the busy bridge around the men that were replacing real large cable bolts onto certain spots of the bridge.

Joe , and his crew spent many long weeks on the bridge making routine repairs, making sure all areas of importance passed strict inspections, but Joe loved his hobby of making fruit wine. In his cellar he discovered a unique , new, and delicious mixed flavor of fruit wine that was remarkable.

Joe, and Sam drank a little of the delicious wine on their days off. Lena, and Virginia, the wives of the two men actually felt that their men were hitting up the wine too often .

The Brooklyn project was considered finished , but Joe and Sam decided to take a few closer looks at the bridge joints before beginning work on the Statue Of Liberty ,so very late in the night after enjoying their fruit wine they took a drive on the bridge. Suddenly a cable bolt popped , and a mean cable whipped loose, almost slicing their work truck completely in half. And like something out of a thriller movie the cable got caught up quickly to the cab , and the truck shot up in the air , and was caught up in cables. Joe , and Sam had to fight for their lives. They hustled hard to get away from the cab in case it would drop crashing down. They were high up , looking down at the lake below.

Thank goodness Joe remembered two emergency bungee lines that he kept in the work truck just in case something dangerous might happen because the two men knew their high wire work would be risky. Joe, and Sam tied down the ropes, and said real nice quick prayers to the Lord , then took their leaps of faith together, after they tied their end cords around themselves. Leaping for their lives, they landed right into the lake near a Coast guard cutter that fortunately scooped them up .

Late that night the two men went home drenched, but safe, and they fell to sleep . As for Lena, and Virginia, the two wives listened to breaking news while Joe, and Sam headed straight for the wine cellar early the next morning after skipping breakfast. All of Sam's kids slept over by Joe, and Lena's house . The kids wanted to have a sleep over. They were all like a big family. The two ladies ran downstairs to the cellar , alarmed. Lena yelled, " What went on at that bridge Joe? " Virginia said, " Yeah Sam, what happened over there? "

Joe, and Sam reached behind their home made bar, took out two wine glasses for their wives , and filled them .That was when two of the best workers in New York city told their ladies how blessed they were to still be alive when the cable popped.

Lena, and Virginia could not believe what happened. They were stunned. All Joe said was, " How do you like our new flavored wine Hun ? " Sam said, " How about a kiss, Virginia my sweetheart ."

Virginia, and Lena took a few sips from their wine , and they grumbled while walking upstairs to check on all the kids . Virginia on her way up was hotter than a fire cracker , and said , " You two need to stay out of trouble, and off the highways after drinking wine before both of you are arrested." Sam said, " You're definitely right Hun, now how about that kiss ."

God Bless Everyone

I really did like this. It brought back a time in my life when I was working that way. You did a good job with this, in fact it was a home run.
