The Horrible Ordeal Of Hurricane Issac.

Updated on September 26, 2012

Friday, August 31, 2012

All I can say is that hurricanes are a horrible ordeal for a lot of people . So many people will be homeless because of Issac. This monster was not only a big wind maker, but a serious surge , and rain maker. This storm was more than a category one in my opinion. I have seen many hurricanes, and I know what it's like to see hurricane winds , and very large gusts.

I thought Joann, and I , and Becky would get threw the storm without losing electrical power, but we lost it Wednesday at around 3:00 A.M. I woke up to darkness in our home.

Quickly our home began getting hot. I asked Joann to hand me the flashlight that was on a dresser near her. My right foot was in severe pain, and I could hardly walk. I picked up a portable fan that runs on eight large batteries. Joann, and I checked inside our home to see if everything was alright. Our nine cats were doing fine.

I planned ahead with a lot of ice in the freezer. The ice lasted all threw our blackout. I grabbed my portable CB radio to listen to police bands, and weather forecasts. We opened the curtains of our large bedroom window , and I watched tall trees bending, and swaying back, and forth, and taking on fast hits from powerful gusts. I prayed that the gusts would not knock trees on our power line.

I held the portable fan toward Joann, and Becky for thirty six hours. I only pointed a little bit of the fan air on myself. I did not want them to suffer from heat. It was dark, but our home was heating up. Air conditioning is like Heaven to us. I can barely live without it. I do not know how in the world ny mother, and father, and my brother, and I survived without air conditioning , but we did. Now I can not live without it.

I was short tempered, disgusted, stressed out, and hated Issac for being so darn slow. It just tortured everyone in it's path that knew they would get flooded homes. It lingered, and lingered, beating on everyone in many states.

I thank God in Heaven that the death toll was not high in numbers . New Orleans has a very nice wall now created by the Corp of Engineers. It took billions to build it.

Still hurricanes beat down homes, and people with high waters, high winds, and with there aftermaths.

During the day I would set up the fan where it could be pointed at Joann , and Becky. I watched the fan carefully because our lives depended on it. This morning I woke up with the fan setting on my chest. My hand was practically glued to it securely so that it would not slip from my grasp. If it would fall it could stop working, and we would suffer horribly.

I opened my eyes. I did not know that I fell to sleep three hours holding the fan on them. Joann was sitting beside me , while Becky was sleeping. The first thing I said was," Are you, and Becky alright ? Did you get enough air ? Did the fan help ? Joann said, " Don't worry, we are fine."

I woke up short tempered. My nerves from the anxiety, and stress made me a bit awful . I said, " I told you, and Becky to get out of here because this lousy place is a hot box , but you are hard headed. Why didn't you listen to me, and get the hell out of here ? I could bring you, and Becky to a shelter, or to you're brother's home.

Joann said, " I wish you would stop trying to make us leave. I am getting tired of you trying to make me leave? I told Joann that Becky may not be able to take the heat when it comes after the storm, and even now.

Joann said, " Becky, and I are fine, and you need to take something for you're nerves. "Becky did get hot a few times between battery changes of the fan. It was just a twelve inch diameter fan, but it was like gold to us.

I changed batteries after twenty four hours of using it. Carefully I changed them so that I would not break our precious plastic fan.

Next time I will be prepared. I will definitely buy two more fans. I will order them like I ordered the one we have. Joann told me I should point the fan toward myself once in a while. I said, no , I want it on you, and Becky. The ice in the refrigerator was vital. In case we would get over heated, the ice could bring down our temperatures. I asked Joann, and Becky a thousand times if they were alright. They said they were fine.

The fact of the matter is that people these days depend on air conditioning if their up in age, or disabled. Joann, and I are nit young, and Becky is of course more disabled than us .

Today being Friday, I laid in my bed with my fan pointed at them, I fell into a deep sleep, and woke up to the sound of our air conditioning kicking in. In the name of Christ God in Heaven, our power was back on, and it felt so wonderful to have cool air again.

It seemed like Heaven. The room immediately cooled down. Outside it was ninety degrees, and inside it felt like a hundred. I had my fan on Becky, and Joann . Our sweet Becky, and my sweet wife did not suffer. I laid in bed with my portable CB radio, a flashlight, and with my fan.

I may not have been a big money earner in my life, and maybe I am not all that brilliant, but nothing will stop me from doing the things I must do for Joann, and Becky, and for our animals.

I made sure that Joann, and Becky ate the best of our food in our home. I was satisfied with cans of green beans, and water.

Tomorrow I plan to buy some ground beef to make hamburgers, and I will buy ice cream, and some really good things for our home. When you do not have to suffer, it is a great time for a celebration. I am going to cook some great food tomorrow for my family of Joann, and Becky, and for our animals.

This hurricane was a monster, just like Katrina. I know it for a fact because I experienced the wrath of Katrina. Two thousand people died because of Katrina. It could have been worst, but the loss of even one precious life is always just as bad.

Ice, and air conditioning are precious. I know because I did not have either one during Katrina. Katrina was a killing machine. This one would have been just as bad, but the governors, and mayors, and city officials everywhere worked very hard to provide many states with safety for lives in peril.

This will be another expensive hit on America's bank book until some researchers figure out how to protect the world from natural disasters, protecting lives will always be a great expense monetarily to our country. Money is not as important as life, but money is important for quality of life.

The worst is over. We are waiting for our rivers to crest, and cause floods. Issac was not funny. It caused the Mississippi river to flow backwards, and the old Mississippi is one really large river.

Thank God this was not a serious killer, but it could easily have been.

God Bless Everyone.

My dear friend, I am so relieved to read that you and Becky and Joann made it safely though the storms, although you suffered some discomfort. It's just awful when the heat and humidity take your breath and zap your strength. I knew in my heart though that you would be as prepared as possible because you have always done such a wonderful job of looking after your family.

Every year I think of buying a gas generator with enough power to at least keep our refrigerator and heat or air conditioner running, but each year something else comes up that we need the money for. I will have to start a separate savings for a generator and just get it done. We lost power for a few days about four years ago due to an ice storm and we had the gas heater on the front porch to at least keep us from freezing to death but it was cold! We only lost electrical power so I could also cook on our gas stove. I have an old fashioned coffee pot that works on the stove too so we can have our, all important morning coffee..ha ha.

I will keep you in my prayers, as always. Please give our love to Becky and Joann.

Dear Blossum : Thank you dear heart for you're wonderful prayers. We love you too. Prayers, and authorities warning people everywhere to seek shelter, and responders, volunteers, Red Cross, fast working electric power workers have helped save many lives. Very few were lost even though a few are cherished like thousands because life is precious. I am very happy that our country has such a great warning system with weather folks that notify islanders, and coastal residents of impending dangers of storms when they are near. God Bless You, and you're dear loved ones dear heart.

Dear allways exploring : Thank you precious heart for you're kindness. Glad it is over for us. I wish the west could have gotten some of our rain. It would have helped Kansas, and many other states that grow corn, and has fires, and droughts. God Bless You , and you're family.

I'm not sure where you live, but I'm in S. Fl. and we were prepared, but got only a lot of wind and rain, thank goodness. We have some flooding. I wrote a Hub about being prepared for any natural disaster. I was thinking about Issac and how people should be prepared. I'm glad you and your family are OK.

      Goodnight, Mary

I can't tell you how often I thought of you and your family as I watched that storm. I was not in any danger but I can tell you it blew some heat our way because we had been having fall like weather but today was up in the 90s and I couldn't bear to be outside so I know how miserable it must have been for you. I only have those little hand held fans that are about a dollar and run by battery, need to look for your big kind. So glad you are all OK and have a real party tomorrow friend! GB
