The Life of a Green Real Estate Agent

Updated on October 22, 2010

Green Key Real Estate is a national real estate chain based in San Francisco that focuses on the unique niche area of green real estate. If you’ve ever wondered how to buy a green home then it’s a company that you’ll find interesting. This article is about James Rogers, a green real estate agent.

James originally began studying sustainability as an economics undergrad during a course that he took while studying abroad in Madrid, Spain. After seeing how far ahead in this issue that Europe was in comparison with the United States, his awareness and interest were piqued and he realized the importance of incorporating sustainability into every aspect of our lives. When he learned how much of our greenhouse gas emissions come from the building industry, he realized that this was one of the most important areas for change.

He is involved on the real estate transaction side of alternative home building. His influence will have its greatest effect with home remodeling since the majority of home buyers remodel at least one room after home purchase. If he can guide his buyers to use alternative home building techniques in these remodels, making the homes more energy-efficient using environmentally-friendly building methods, he has done his job.

Rogers reports that San Francisco is an exciting place to be involved in this kind of building. He is a member of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee of The Commonwealth Club. He also attends monthly “green drinks” networking events, is a member of Built It Green’s Real Estate Council and regularly has the opportunity to network with green builders in the city. He is a Certified Green Building Professional through Build It Green, a Bay Area organization committed to increasing awareness of green building. He is also an EcoBroker, which means that he has been trained in the environmental aspects of homes and how they relate to the buying / selling process.

He works as a real estate agent with Green Key Real Estate, which is the first and only green real estate company in the city. The company’s focus is on incorporating environmentally responsible and socially just principles and practices into all aspects of the business. They run an office waste minimization program, power their offices with wind energy, respect tenants’ and home owners’ rights and responsibilities and donate a portion of their profits to promote green building practices. Their goal is to empower, enrich and educate all clients towards green-minded buying, selling and remodeling of their homes. They work to make sure that environmentally responsible and safe decisions are made with these purchases, connecting their buyers to green service providers and products to make the entire community more sustainable.

Many realtors can walk you through a house and show you the kitchen and the backyard, but how many can tell you about easy upgrades to make your home environmentally friendly? Or how to cut heating and cooling costs with some small repairs. As a Green Realtor, Rogers and green real estate agents like him can help you in all of your home buying and selling needs, while adding a level of service and knowledge that you really can’t find anywhere else at the current time. They can help with all of the traditional aspects of the sale but can also add information about indoor air quality, sustainability, energy efficiency and resource conservation.
