The Money Pit - Winter Woes

Just when I thought my Christmas problems were over with the house (remember my earlier posting about the problems with the radiator?), they started again. :( Sigh, I've grown accustomed over the previous little while to having some sort of an emergency or issue with the house in relation to the family descending upon us in force, but this is just getting silly to be honest!

The story is as follows - about 5 days ago our heating went out (the pilot light on the boiler didn't stay on) so we had to call out British Gas (again - thank god I got that Home Care plan!!) and they came out and showed my wife how to reset it as I had to go to work. Great, all sorted an no issues I thought.

Problem was that a day later, it went off again. This time I took off the cover by myself and was able to restart the pilot light myself - woo hoo! not too shabby ... except ... it didn't stay lit! Time to call British Gas again! :(

The Phone Call

Hmm ... OK, bit of a problem here ... Friday night into Saturday we had about 4-6 inches of snow throughout UK and in case you didn't know - this is a country that really has a problem with snow!  So how does this tie into the phone call?  Simple really - I don't think anyone in the call center for British Gas was able to make it into work!! 

My first couple of calls through the call tree simply went to a busy signal and then after it actually started to ring, we had to hold for about 45min before we were finally able to speak to a live body!

Anyways long story short, the earliest we could get an engineer was Monday morning - even though we are still a priority (we don't have any heating) I guess we're not enough of a priority!  Sigh!  Thank god for the little portable heater that we have + the electric fireplace ... the only room we can use is the lounge and with a couple of blankets we're able to keep ourselves wrapped up and warm.

While listening to the message on the British Gas phone number, they referred me back to their website for some additional ideas and things that I could perhaps do to resolve and fix the situation with regards to my boiler.

So I took a look at one of their video's and while the information seemed to be fairly simple and straightforward ... I didn't have a condensing boiler (mine is an ancient one!) so it was unfortunately pretty useless.

Its Fixed ... for now!

OK, Engineer arrived today (have I mentioned its the same guy yet? - fortunately he's a really nice guy, but I'm dreading the thought that if this keeps on happening, I'm going to have get him his own room!) ... and he's managed to take the cover off the 20yr old monstrosity of a boiler that in some way or another seems to be at the root of all my problems.

Anyways, the issue seems to be with the heating element - basically it is the original one and for whatever reason it decided that this Christmas was a good time to stop working!  So now that its been replaced we have heat again!  Yaaa ... lets see what happens next.
