The beauty of Monkey Orchid
If you like something unique, you are in the right place. Now, I’ll talk about orchid as one of the most beautiful flowers among other flowers. We may know orchid very well. The orchid family has diverse type. Most of them are colorful and the rest of them with fragrant blooms. The orchid species is widespread from tropical region to circumpolar region, although most of its members are found in the tropics. Most of member of this tribe live as epiphytes, especially those from tropics. Epiphytes orchid can live from the dew and damp air. Epiphytic orchid usually grow on other tree without harming the host plant and they need shade from the sun. The roots absorb nutrient from the fog, rain, and air. The type of epiphytic orchid, like: Cattleya sp., Dendrobium sp., Vanda sp. Phalaenopsis sp.
Another type like: terrestrial orchid, saprophyte orchid, and litofit orchid. Terrestrial orchid is usually grown in the ground and it required direct sunlight. The roots take food from the soil. The type of terrestrial orchid, like: Phaius sp. Saprophyte orchid is usually grown on media which containing humus or dry leaves and requires little sunshine. Kind of this orchid has no leaves and chlorophyll. The type of Saprophyte orchid, like: Goodyera sp. Litofit orchid is usually grow on rock or rocky soil. It is also resistant with full of sunlight. Kind of Litofit orchid, like: Paphiopedilum sp.
Monkey and Baboon
But have you ever heard about kind of orchid like monkey face. The first time I saw this orchid, I say “wow”. It’s like a miracle of the plant. It’s quite strange when we hear about an orchid with monkey face. Even most of variety of colors, everything looks like a monkey face. The monkey orchid is usually hidden in the altitude of nearly 2,000 meters in the jungle of Ecuador and Southeast Peru.
The scientific name of this orchid is Dracula Simia. Dracula means a little dragon as it looks. There are two long spurs on the flower like a dragon and Simia means that the flowers like a monkey. In the Wikipedia, it said “The Monkey-Like Dracula". It’s kind of epiphytic orchid with the genus Dracula. The flowers have fragrance like a ripe orange.

Dracula Simia means little dragon monkey, based on trusted information from the University of British Columbia's Botanical Garden and Centre For Plant Research. This orchid was named in 1978 by the botanist Luer. Dracula Simia grows between 3,280 ft and 6,560 ft above sea level in forests in southeast Ecuador. In this altitude, the monkey orchid can flower at any time. We can find more than 120 species of Dracula Simia and mostly found in Ecuador.
Dracula Simia can only be grown in partial shade and the cold areas. That’s why not many people who can take care of it, even we are definitely quite strange to hear about the monkey flower. It remains very rare in “captivity”. For those lucky enough to have one, so please keep it well. Just like all orchids, it needs a lot of care and patience.
