Tips for When You Have More Clothes Than Closet
1. Double Hang
If you have clasping hangers, hang two (or even three!) items on your hanger if possible. This usually applies easiest to skirts which can be hung in pairs or trios if they are thin enough.
Pro-Tip: If your skirts have thick waistbands clip them upside down so you can hang more of them.
Hanging doubles can occasionally work for shirts or dresses too. Any spaghetti strap dresses/shirts are best hung second and placed on the little grooves of the hanger.
For sweaters, coats, or cardigans, you can layer them onto the hanger as well. Depending on the weight of the clothing article and the sturdiness of the hanger, three or four articles of clothing are ideal. This works especially well if you experience all of the seasons where you may not need the coat or sweater for several months. And it works even better if you have winter 90% of the time and have a really small closet.
2. Only Hang What Wrinkles Easily
If you have really limited closet space try to hang only what NEEDS to be hung. Which might include suits or easily wrinkles dresses or shirts. Otherwise, if you happen to have drawers or a place where you store folded clothes try to store as many clothes there.
3. Invest in Vertical Hanging Organizers
Buying a vertical hanging organizer really give you more space. It doesn't even have to go in or near your closet if you don't want it to.
Vertical hanging organizers can be short or tall, hang off a rod in your closet or hung with an adhesive plastic hook. They are great to when you have little nooks and cranny's that you want to use up. Even vertical shoe organizers will do the trick if you don't have horizontal space.
4. Add a Tension Rod
Got an area in the room with close walls where nothing really fits? Grab a tension rod, stick it between the wall, and voila you added some space.
Pro-Tip: If you are tall enough, install two for maximum space!
5. Use Boxes as Drawers
Any space on the floor or the under the already hung clothes, don't be afraid to use boxes to store folded clothes! Anything that fits within the closet is the best fit, so things like shoe boxes or storage boxes will hold a good amount of clothes especially with so many new fancy folding techniques out there.
6. Use Space Below the Hanging Clothes
As mentioned above, use the space you have under the hung clothes. Store shoes, more clothes in boxes, even other things like sleeping bags, occasionally used sweaters, or bedsheets.
Pro-Tip: If you want to go the shoe route, buy a shoe rack, or make your own!
PRO-TIP: To get rid of clothing, the best ways are:
+ Checking if it fits. If it doesn't TOSS IT.
+ Check if it is ripped or stained and can't be fixed. If you can't TOSS IT (literally, don't try selling it)
+ Ask yourself "Have I worn it? Am I going to wear it soon? If not, TOSS IT.
7. Toss It Out
That's right. Not enough closet space? Get rid of it! Sell it online, donate to a Goodwill or someplace like it, give it away in bulk, or hold a yard sale. If you aren't wearing it, why keep it? If you sell it, it might even earn you a few extra bucks.
Often we keep things out of sentimentality or thinking we might fit into it again. But if you have a small closet or just REALLY need to cut down on clothes, it might be time to say goodbye and sacrifice.
