Tips on Choosing a Home Office Writing Desk

Updated on September 22, 2010

A home office writing desk should be practical and also comfortable for the user. Some of the desk types and designs include corner desks, desks with hutches and U-shaped desks.

For saving space in the home office, a corner desk is convenient. Also called L-shaped desks, they can be placed in a corner to make the most efficient use of the floor space which can be very desirable especially if you are tight on office space. Most have a lot of drawers and other compartments, and there is always enough legroom under the table. Because of the L-shape, you have more room on the top of the desk and you can keep one part of the top for your computer and other equipment, and the other part for keeping papers, notes and files.

A desk with hutches is a good choice if you want to have a lot of room for storing documents, files and other paperwork. These are smaller than the corner types, and have less space on top, but come with a lot of drawers and shelves. The shelving often backs onto the wall on top of the desk, so that you save floor space and still have plenty of legroom.

For larger home offices, you can try U-shaped writing desks. For anyone who works at home and needs a lot of desk space combined with storage drawers and shelves, this can be a good choice. You need a bigger room for a configuration like this, but if you have a home-based business and have invested in a large working area, this is a good option.

Whichever style and design you choose, make sure that it is also comfortable to work at. If you run a home business and sit by the desk for most of the day, it is very important that the top is the right height. For the best and most comfortable working position, the top of the desk should be around the height of your waist. There should also be enough space under the top for moving your legs around so that you can sit comfortably.

Depending on the size of your space all these desk styles are suitable for a home office. They are available in different materials and price ranges so you should be able to find a good that fits your budget. Learn more at the Writing Desk Specialist.
