Ugli Fruit Tree
The Official Trademark
Ugli Tangelo Fruit ~
Ugli first and foremost is not the type of fruit but the brand name of the Jamaican Tangelo fruit used by Cabel Hall Citrus Limited to market this citrus fruit of the species Citrus reticulata x Citrus paradisi.
Not the prettiest fruit in the world, the name as we may pronounce it in Europe and America is “ugly” whilst in its native Jamaica, it is pronounced “hugly”. This tangelo fruit is also known as Uniq fruit or Unique fruit.
The trade mark brand Ugli was created back in 1934, thanks to an importer requesting “more of that ugly fruit” which does describe its appearance perfectly!
This tangelo fruit tree was first discovered growing in the wild near Brown’s Town, Jamaica over 80 years ago and was then grown for the wider population to enjoy by the family who discovered it.
The Ugli fruit is now exported through Trout Hall Ltd with registered licensee distributors for America, Canada, Europe and Scandinavia.

About the Ugli Fruit ~
With a wrinkly, puckered skin the Ugli fruit skin may be green to greenish-yellow to yellow or even orange.
The fruit varies between 4 inches (10 cm) to 6 inches (15 cm) in diameter is a cross between a grapefruit, a Seville orange and a tangerine
. As it is only harvested from the fruit trees when fully ripe, it is always ready to eat when it hits the shops.
Similar in size to a grapefruit but not as bitter, it is sweet and tangy like a tangerine or orange.
The Skin is easily peeled like an orange or you may cut the fruit in half and eat like a grapefruit.
The orange juicy flesh is segmented so may be eaten like a tangerine or orange either.
They are available from November to May but depending on the climatic conditions in Jamaica, they are sometimes available in July to September.
