Before

Allow me to preface this hub by saying we got the house for a great price with the intention of doing a lot of cosmetic updates. The bones of the house are good so here's hoping that we do not uncover any major issues during our remodel. You will see in this photo that the yellow color choice along with the wood grain chair and stair railing and cheap grade laminate flooring were a drab recipe. So let's see what we can do cosmetically to brighten and upgrade this space, shall we?

Laminate flooring out and parquet wood flooring in

We were shocked to find real wood flooring underneath the laminate. It was not in the best shape but we returned the tile we had purchased to Lowes and rented a floor sander instead. This was our first floor refinishing project ever so forgive the imperfections. We removed the base board moldings and sanded most of it with the large sander and then the edge sanding required our SKIL belt sander. After sanding I applied a coat of Minwax stain and 2 coats of polyurethane.

To our surprise we found real wood flooring in the foyer. It exhibited some water damage near the front door and was certainly in need of some attention all the way around. Now I know there are better ways of applying floor stain but I went with what I had. I used a lambskin sponge for application and soft cloths for wiping. The color of Minwax stain I used was Ebony.Looked terribly dark at first and I was concerned at this point. I wanted light and bright so I was afraid I had made a mistake with my color choice. Let me know what you think after you see the finished room please.

Let there be paint

Once the stain and poly were dry (after a few days) we covered the floor with plastic and began painting the walls and trim. We used Valspar Signature Paint and Primer. Bright white is the color on the trim and Khaki is the color above the chair rail. Because we want to be able to resell the house soon I am sticking with a neutral color palette and will use furnishings and accents for color.

I know that this photo makes it look like a hobbit house with Carl playing Gandolph coming for a visit but he is 6'3" so keep that in mind.

I painted the stair railings with high gloss black paint and love how it looks. Now, the carpet will be another hub entirely in itself because we have lots of it and me wants it all gone! The seagrass runner is from Overstock.com for those interestedJust highlighting the new flush mount chandelier I ordered from Overstock.com. I bought 4 LED bulbs from Home Depot and it is bright let me tell you! Love it! The crystals are real glass and are heavy. It is worth every penny spent.

The Big Reveal

Thanks to all of you that checked out my first blog. I hope you have feedback for me that will allow me to improve future postings. I will gladly get item numbers to anyone interested in the products mentioned. I have not done well with tracking my expenses for each room because much of the paint and materials are for multiple spaces but I think I could easily say we completed this small project for under $150.00. That is including the equipment rental. We will be working on this house for months to come so please check back each week. Until then...let's all keep improving!
