India as you know was a place which gave birth to many Demons ( Rakshasa's ) like RAVANA who was killed by god VISHNU taking human form on earth.
Similarly when Lord SHIVA had to fight a super powerful demon whom he killed ultimately but his soul was alive and his soul asked him to grant him a place on his land with power to rule the place Lord Shiva granted him and said that earth was also his land and told him to lay permanently on land with whatever power he had thought he wanted he had no option but lay on land.The Demon had thought he will rule the heavens as Lord Shiva lived there Now he rules the land of any size on earth and we have to follow his terms and conditions so we will not disturb him on the land where he sleeps in the direction during day and night.

WHAT People want as per Vastu :-
People if they want the their home they have only 4 directions,East,West,North & South these are the basic directions.Next is the corners between these directions.The corners have big influence as they have power from 2 directions associated with a planet as per Hindu Mythology.
The Gods ruling these corners are as under:-
1 - East is for Lord Indira.
2 - North-East is for planet Jupiter
3 - North is for planet Mercury and Kubera.
4 - North-West is for Vayu Deva.
5 - West is .for Lord Varuna and Lord Saturn.
6 - South-West is for the Devils and Lord Rahu.
7 - South is for Pluto,Mars and Lord Yamadeva.
8 - South-East is for Venus and Lord Agnideva.
