Vintage Decorating

Decorating a home with antiques and other old and worn items has become increasingly popular. These vintage finds can be easily incorporated into almost any décor style with a mix of the old and new being a perfect blend of warmth and chic.

In fact, a major part of my decorating blog, Rustic Crafts & Chic Décor, has now been dedicated to this style that preserves the past in a way that is current for today's designs.

I began my love of vintage decorating early on, at the beginning of my marriage, out of necessity really. We were given several pieces of antique furniture which turned out to be more of a blessing than we ever realized. These pieces were built so well and had so much character that what started out as temporary is still being used today - twenty-seven years later!

Over the years, I have collected vintage items from flea markets, antique malls and best of all - grandparents! Some things have been refurbished and used in totally new and unique ways and others have been polished and put on display.

I will be sharing some of my ideas and photos with you which you can also find to more extent on my blog.

Flea Market Finds

Flea markets are an excellent source for finding vintage items for a good price. I have found all kinds of unusual items that I have been able to incorporate into my décor. You would be surprised at the ways I have used some of these treasures!

If you look carefully, you can also find some pretty good deals at antique malls. Since each booth is rented individually, there can be quite a range in pricing. Not all of the booths are operated by dealers.

Here are the ways I have incorporated my antique mall and flea market finds into my home decorating:

Vintage Industrial Wire Basket

That rusted wire basket was once an industrial parts washer basket. You have to think a bit creatively to want to incorporate this into your home décor. However, industrial items like this are hot right now - especially when you have a rusted patina.

When combined with candles, magazines or books, it takes on a slightly more modern look. You can dress it up as chic as you want with glass or floral accents making even more of a design contrast.

Vintage Cupcake Tin

You wouldn't want to use a rusted cupcake tin to bake with but you could use it as a tealight candle holder! Filling the cups with some clear glass rock and tealights makes a perfectly rustic chic table decoration.

A reader of my blog also suggested filling some of the cups with water and flowers while keeping the others for candles to make a romantic table centerpiece.

Vintage Heat Register

What do you do with an old heat register? You turn it into a clip board, of course! The design of the metal grid makes it perfect for clipping messages or pictures to.

Vintage Wooden Hangers

I love to repurpose vintage wooden hangers. I have made wall hooks, jewelry hangers, and these simple photo hangers for the wall.

It would be fun to group several of these together for an interesting photo collage using either scenic pictures or personal portraits.
