A Prized Possession - My Blanket

Updated on April 13, 2015

I Never Leave Home Without My Prized Blankie

Well I thought long and hard about the Giant Squid School 2nd challenge - writing about my prized possession. The obvious things came to mind right away - my photos and negatives dating back to when I was a child are neatly packed in two large rubbermaid totes and they would definitely be the first thing I'd grab if my house were burning down. The second thing that I thought of was my garden....I love it and it brings me so much joy even as I sit here now, I can look out the window to see all my glorious flowers in full bloom. My peonies started blooming just this morning as a matter of fact. My friends know I love gardening and just last week I got a flower cookie bouquet from one of my girlfriends. The problem is that I don't really think of my garden as a possession. After those two thoughts, I struggled a bit because honestly, I am not really into material things. Perhaps it is because I've moved 6 times and I just don't really get attached to stuff and maybe it is because my stuff isn't all that great....I don't know, but I finally had a light bulb moment a few minutes ago.

As I sat here typing on my laptop as I do most days, I ALWAYS have my trusty blanket on me along with a 3 ring-binder that my laptop sits on so that it won't overheat because of that oh so soft, cuddly blanket. Yep - that's it - my most prized possession is a blankie. Quite a pathetic revelation for a 40 year old - huh!!

Undeniable Facts about My Blankie

#1) I must love it because it really doesn't match a single thing in our house. It is quite simply a drab sort of tan color which really doesn't go with my cheery disposition.

#2) The edges are tattered and I'm constantly cutting off dangling pieces of blanket so it doesn't look quite so bad.

#3) It is almost 5 years old and I really should consider getting a new one, but I just can't go there right now.

#4) Even though I don't sleep with it at home, I never leave home on an overnight trip without it. That's has been to just about every country in Europe and much of the U.S. with me. My husband just LOVES that!

#5) All of my friends and family have come over for a visit and asked me at one time or another - 'Are You Cold?' Yes - I have some part of that blanket draped over me right now and it is about 80 degrees in my house. Hot, just doesn't matter.

#6) My blanket is super soft and even though it is a bit on the short-side and can't cover me from neck to tippy toe, I still love it anyway.

#7) I know that I love my blankie because I take the time to escort it around my house all day. Sometimes it even gets to sit and have lunch or dinner with me.

#8) The one time I forgot my blankie when we went on a weekend excursion, I really did go through a bit of withdrawal. I had to use a towel from the bathroom to cover up with when I was sitting on the hotel couch. All the complaining that I did assured me that my husband won't ever let me forget it again!

#9) I wouldn't even trade my blankie for gourmet desserts like a big 'ole double chocolate brownie .... now that says something!

#10) My sneaky husband waits for me to be outside or in the bathroom and then steals the blanket so he can wash it. I know, I know - weird.

Why Does A 40 Year Old Need A Blankie?

Great Question?

You know I'm wondering the same thing because as it turns out, I did not have a security blanket as a kid and I never sucked my thumb (two things which seem to go together). Maybe it is because I have a chronic illness that keeps me couch-ridden for most of the day so my blanket gives me comfort. Don't know....but what I do know is that I'm not planning on giving it up anytime soon. Even though it is not personalized (like my personalized baby blanket that I toted around as a toddler), it still feels personal to me.

And apparently, I'm not the only adult with a security blanket. I found the woman in the photo on vieux bandit flickr feed.

Lose the Blanket, Linus!
Lose the Blanket, Linus!

Linus loves his blanket. In fact, Lucy thinks he's too attached. But can Linus do without his trusty blanket? Lucy wants to make him!

Poor Linus .... always getting hassled about that blanket.

Kids Super Soft Blankets on Amazon

Super soft security blankets for kids. I can attest to the fact that the Minky products are some of the softest, cuddliest blankets on the market for kids. My nephew and friends with twins love them!

I had a good laugh (tongue in cheek) writing this lens today and I hope you have a good laugh too! Don't go taking it too seriously :)

Right now I'm wrapped in my super-fluffy bathrobe which makes me look like a polar bear. No one thinks twice about that though.

If I'm on the couch, summer or winter, I'm wrapped up in my gold afghan or my marroon afghan. Either one works fine! Nice lens!

We have a large blue Linus blankie that benefits Project Linus. Of course with kids in the house, I have a built in excuse for having lots of comfortable blankies around.
