Cutlery to be used in order from the outside.
Side plate and napkin to the left (or napkin central).
Wine glass (or 2, one for white, one for red) at top right of place setting, along with a water glass.
Flowers centrally or at intervals, depending on the size of table and the occasion, but making sure they don't overhang any food (I actually prefer little candles or small posies in glass).
A crisp white tablecloth (maybe with a runner if it's really special, e.g. dark red for a ruby anniversary).
Place names, hand-written if you're good at it, centrally at the top of the place setting.
Water jugs on the table.
Condiments in appropriate (i.e. decorative) containers.
Maybe little ornaments to take home - went to a wedding once where the bride was a shoe-a-holic and all the ladies had a miniature ceramic pair of shoes!
It's great to have a formal meal once in a while but I love cosy family meals the best - less stressful!
