Yes a brush would do the trick and I would always wash it the other way out so that I would have no means of touching the sharp graters.
If your talking about the hand graters for making shredded potatoes or cheese, I buy cheap toothbrushes for cleaning that sort of stuff so I do not cut up my hands!
