Why are the covers of paint cans so badly designed?

Ever thought about why the covers of paint cans are designed so badly that once you open the lid the first time, you won't be able to close it properly again. Eventually, any unused paint will dry up and you need to buy a new can of paint. Do you think it is because the paint companies don't know how to design a proper lid, or because a proper lid will be too expensive, or because it was designed in this exact way so that they can sell more paint?
