Yes, I have used many types of steam cleaners. Before I owned one I would rent it from a store that offered them for rent. They were in the big chain supermarkets.
I purchased one ten years ago and it works just fine. I have pets and they track in lots of sand and they also shed hair. I have never had a problem with my carpet steamer. The one I have now is a Kennmore, the old round steamer, not upright.
You will have to have some kind of steamer solution to put into your steamer. Read the ingredients before you purchase the solution and if you buy the solution, use it as directed using the right quantities of water verses solution.
Test clean a small area. there should be no color coming from your carpet, just gray or soiled water.
Don't spray too much solution out and suction up what you put down. Do a small area at a time. Put the solution down and then suction that area up before moving on. Make sure all the solution is suctioned out of the area that you sprayed.
Be careful not to make the water too hot, which might do damage to your carpet.
If you suction all of the solution out of your carpet, it will dry in no time.
I hope this helps a little.
