Will aerating my lawn do any good?

I live in the Southeast US and we have Bermuda grass for our lawn. Over the past couple of years, our lawn has developed some bare spots. Our lawn care company, who we use for fertilizing and weed control, has strongly suggested we have our lawn aerated this Spring. I've had a little experience with aeration, and I wonder if this process really does anything for our lawn, or is the company just trying to sell us another service? Would love to hear from anyone with experience with this!

Thanks, Act 3. I haven't heard of topdressing - I'll have to ask our lawn care company about it. I appreciate all your information and help!

Yikes, I hadn't considered that our problem might be insects. I'll have to look into this. Thanks for the link and information!! Much appreciated :)
