Finding Creative Basement Bar Ideas
If your home has a basement then chances are you've dreamed of having a basement bar from time to time? So what's been stopping you, not sure what you need to know to plan it out or just can't find a basement bar design idea you love? Just so happens I can help you with both. You see I've been designing homes and helping people with remodeling projects just like basement bar ideas for over 30 years.
In this article I am going to share with you the things you'll need to know to decide your options like if your new basement bar will have a sink and running water often referred to as a wet bar or if you will simply create a dry bar for a place to sit around with friends and watch TV.
We will also cover some of the most popular things to include in your new basement bar ideas if you have enough room. Before getting too far into the topic of planning a basement bar it is valuable to establish a project budget since this will help you decide what basement bar options will give you the most "bang for your buck"
Plumbing...Will You Need to Change or Add Plumbing
In the beginning I mentioned the idea of a Wet Bar so I think we should talk more on this subject first. A wet bar is typically any bar set-up that requires some form of water supply and drain. Consider these bar options when deciding if you will need to plan water and drain into your new bar.
Will you have a:
Under-counter Ice Maker
If your plans will include any or all of these then you will need both a water supply and drain line to them. Water supply is rather easy since it can usually be built into the wall but a drain will require either cutting the concrete floor or building a platform for your bar to run the drain above the floor. Both of these options need to be factored into your basement bar planning budget.
The photo we have included here shows how to create a simple wall mounted wet bar where your plumbing would come through the wall from a possible unfinished space behind. Good planning is always key to getting the most "Bang for your buck" when planning your basement bar ideas.
How Much Space Will You Need
Here is another important part to think about to help you when planning a basement bar ideas budget. How much space do you have available? Are you planning on using an existing open space or would you like to open up some additional space?
You can see in this home bar we designed that all we had to do was create an opening through a load bearing wall and create our basement bar area just beyond the basement family room.
You can see in the next section that we have created a drawing to illustrate the basic amount of space you will need if your plans include both a front and back bar design.
Basic Basement Bar Dimesions
If you are going to use an existing space when planning your home bar then consider the following dimensions when planning. A standard cabinet like a kitchen cabinet is 24" deep so you want to plan that your back bar or bar against a wall will be out 24" from the wall.
If you are going to have a front bar also then plan a space between 30" to 42" from the front of your back bar to the face of the front bar. This front bar can be from 12" to 24" deep depending on what you are doing there.(You need more depth for a sink or wine frig as an example).
When planning your bar seating allow a minimum of 28" to 32" for each seat you are planning this will help you decide how many bar stools will work well for your bar area.
Home Improvement Made Easy
The front of this wall gives you an area to get creative when choosing how to cover it. One word of caution though, be careful if considering a cultured stone face on this wall as it can be a real knee killer for you and your guests.
How About Your Basement Bar Top
We couldn't have a discussion about basement bar ideas without covering your options on basement bar tops. Will your bar top include a bar rail finished edge? We have included a photo of the 2 most common bar rail profiles here. You should be able to find this bar rail available locally as a special order product in almost any wood species you need. This rail creates a truly authentic bar look and is worth looking into for your project.
How will you finish your basement bar top? We prefer using a poured epoxy resin system. Watch this video for easy to follow instructions and a link below for the product you will need.
Before jumping into the video consider this. You can place thin objects or photos below this finish to create a one of a kind custom basement bar top here.
Maybe you will place photos of favorite trips or places you want to visit or maybe some favorite sporting event or team. The point here is that whatever becomes a part of your basement bar top will become a favorite topic of conversations around the bar for years to come.
