Bead Curtains For Doors

Updated on August 14, 2014

Beautiful Beaded Door Curtains For The Home

I remember fondly the bead curtains for doors (also called door beads) that my grandma used in her own home back in the days. They're really cool to decorate your rooms with, as they give a very different look to your home with all the many interesting designs, from guitars, to palm trees, to excellent reproductions of well known paintings or simply retro beads. They're also great as hanging beads for closets, for example.

Beaded door curtains can greatly enhance the look of a home with these gorgeous and elegant designs. Whether made of wood, bamboo or plastic, there is something for everyone. I love these curtains because now you no longer have to open and close your door - all you need is walk right through it!

You will also find videos on how to make your own, including a cute curtain made of paper beads - now that's something you don't see everyday!

You can use them not only for your doorways but also for your windows, and a few other ways that I will show below. All you need is choose the right size for your project. Decorating your home has never been easier. Even children love these curtains for their rooms and if you long for the 60's, 70's and the disco times of the 80's, you'll feel right home here!

Why Bamboo Curtains Are So Popular

Beaded curtains have gained in popularity over the last few years, but bamboo door beads have really seen a rapid increase and I think the reasons for it are quite varied.

First of all bamboo is a natural material that can be easily found in various parts of the world - especially in Asia in abundance. It is strong, yet extremely light. Have you ever held in your hands a bamboo stick? It's like holding plastic - maybe even lighter than that.

Using bamboo materials to make curtains In the Western world is a relatively recent tradition, however it has been used for centuries already throughout Asia, particularly in Japan and China. In fact it was China where bamboo has been first used, based on archaeological discoveries. It was popular in making various tools, bows and arrows as weapons, even shoes and rafts.

At some point it started to be used for making from it jewelry beads, and from there on the leap to use them as curtain material was no leap at all.

So you got a beaded curtain made of bamboo, but it's too wide and it won't fit well for your doors - then what do you do? Here is a useful video that shows how to trim it in a way that the curtain won't get destroyed.

How Many Strands Do You Want?

When you're looking to buy some bead curtains for your doors, you will find them with several strands, down from 30+, up to 125 and even more. Which ones you choose will depend on what you want from your curtain.

Do you want them for decorative purposes or you want to add a touch of privacy to the place? Do you just want a bit of jingle when you move between rooms and partitions, or you do care a lot about the curtain design?

Some of the curtains shown on this page have lots of strands so that the effect is strong - a gorgeous palm tree, the illusion of a real door, or the beautiful reproductions of Kandinsky's squares and rings, or The Old Guitarist by Picasso - these are all heavily detailed designs that need a high density of beaded strands to really capture the elements depicted within. I do like the curtains dense, so I always go for a higher number of strands. Sometimes the illusion is a real piece of art, as the curtains here show - just check out the Picasso imitation above and see that I'm right.

It features neon colors, black light reactive Polka Dots that will illuminate when exposed to UV light. Really cool if you like this type of thing.

And here I thought beaded curtains were too retro for this century. I stand corrected! I actually do hang a beaded curtain in my outside doorway in the summer instead of a screen - it keeps the bugs out just fine. Nice selection on this lens.

Great stuff! We used to have a read bead curtain door on our guest bathroom, right near the entrance to the pool. It was there when we moved in (early 70's). I loved it but just didn't like the fact it was on the bathroom. Eventually, my mom took it down. I wish she would have kept it!
