Best Cleaning Gadgets 2013

Find the best cleaning gadgets to make your 2013 spring clean fun. I'm a gadget fan and find that having the right cleaning appliances makes cleaning much more efficient and a lot more enjoyable. I've tried lots of different cleaning gadgets over the years. Some have been brilliant and some have made more work that they saved!

On this page I'll share the best cleaning gadgets. We'll also look at the latest models of top cleaning gadgets and cool new appliances that are just released or coming out soon.

I used to have a cleaning service, but now I work from home and decided I would rather do my own cleaning than get disturbed by someone else doing it. It's not my favorite thing to be doing. But with some cool gadgets and music playing I find it much more enjoyable.

First, We Need Music!

I don't know about you, but the most important cleaning gadget for me is one that plays music! Having some good music playing definitely helps the time pass more quickly. I'm an old-time country music fan myself, but whatever puts you in a good mood and gets you moving. Personally I use Spotify and my Kindle Fire HD so I can easily take music from room to room. I also use a bluetooth headphones so I can be wireless and can still hear my music when I'm using a noisy gadget.

Best Spring Cleaning Gadgets 2013

Something for Scrubbing ...

The Sonic Scrubber is a great little device for cleaning all those awkward to reach areas and areas where muck just builds up. It's a battery powered device and you can get attachments for different kinds of cleaning.

I have to admit that when these first came out I thought they were a gimmick, but then the positive reviews started, and I got convinced. And it's inexpensive too.

One brilliant use I've found for the pointed head attachment is cleaning out crumbs from the tiny gap around the edge of my induction stovetop. Nothing else worked and it was driving me mad! The sonic scrubber just blasts the crumbs out.

The Sonic Scrubber is battery powered so you won't be trailing cables behind you.

Good for cleaning around faucets and grouting and all those little gaps in kitchens and bathrooms. If you add the extra heads you can also clean baseboards, fabric and upholstery.

What do you hate cleaning the most?

For me, it's wiping down the kitchen countertops. I'd love a little gadget that would sweep up the crumbs and shine my granite countertops automatically several times a day. A sort of mini vacuum / mop robot.

Which cleaning job would you really like to have automated by a cool gadget that does a good job?

Best Window Cleaning Gadget

Now there are some weird and wonderful window-cleaning gadgets on the market including some that use magnets to clean both sides of a window at the same time. But the reviews are mixed at best.

So I've ignored the cool-factor and gone for a well-tested classic for cleaning windows. Well actually this device doesn't actually clean the windows, it vacuums up the cleaning solution and leaves windows shiny and free of streaks.

I have a Karcher Window Vac and I'm rather impressed. You certainly don't need this device if you're good at getting streak free windows. But it does speed things up and give good results provided you keep the blade clean. And I rather enjoy using it.

I have several large mirrors (including a heated on in a shower room), large glass doors on a shower room, a folding glass shower screen over the bath tub, a glass-fronted refrigerator, granite countertops and a glass conservatory and well as very large full height windows.

This little gadget makes cleaning them much less of a chore. I keep admiring my shiny mirrored cabinet (until my kids put finger prints on it again ...)

You can use it after steam-cleaning if you prefer to avoid chemicals.

The Karcher WV50 Plus Window Cleaning Vacuum is well-loved. It sprays detergent to clean the windows and has a vacuum for sucking the liquid away to dry the windows without streaks.

Avoiding streaks is the key thing isn't it. Sometimes I think my windows look cleaner before I clean them ... I don't have a WV50 yet, but I do have other (excellent) Karcher gadgets so this one is going on my list.

Floor Cleaning Gadgets

OK, now we've got the music sorted, lets think about how we'll clean the floors. My house has mostly wood and bamboo flooring with some carpet and rugs so I have to be able to clean hard floors and vacuum carpets.

For spring cleaning you're probably going to want to move more furniture than normal to get into all those corners. A new gadget definitely helps with motivation!

Tip: Clean the floor of a room last

Otherwise you'll get it messy again when you clean the rest of the room. (One day I'll remember to do this. I always seem to get more mess on the floor immediately after cleaning it.)

Robot Vacuum Cleaners

Of course we must take a look at robot vacuum cleaners. We have an early Roomba model (yes I like my gadgets!) and it's surprisingly effective. I don't tend to use it now that I have small children though - I have to look for small pieces of LEGO as I vacuum! They also don't do stairs and that is one of the main carpeted areas in my house.

I'll definitely go back to a robot vacuum cleaner when the kids are bigger. And I'll choose one that you can set on a schedule. A wonderful idea.

Note that sadly robot vacuum cleaners can't empty themselves yet.

The iRobot Roomba 780 Vacuum Cleaning Robot for Pets and Allergies will vacuum automatically to a schedule and you can also control it via remote control.

You also get virtual walls to keep Roomba out of certain areas.

Vacuum Cleaners

I have an old Vax. I've found that now I have a steam cleaner I don't use the carpet washing feature - it's more complex to set up and put away and involves using cleaning products. I'm due a new vacuum cleaner. I'm asthmatic and want a very powerful vacuum cleaner, but preferably not something too heavy.

Ultimate Vacuum Cleaner

SEBO 9806AM Felix 1 Premium Ice Blue Upright Vacuum with Parquet, Light Blue/White - Corded

I've had my eye on a SEBO vacuum cleaner for a while now. Whenever I do the research these machines rise to the top as the ultimate vacuum cleaner.

If my house was fully carpeted I'd go for it, but as I only have a couple of carpeted areas it's not such an easy decision.

The SEBO has great German engineering and replaceable parts - this is something I think about more and more. This is something I consider more and more, for cleaning gadgets I'd rather have something that works well for many years than have to regularly replace a cheaper, less effective product.

More Quality Vacuum Cleaners

Note that some of the best vacuum cleaners are designed for households with pets, but you can still benefit from them even if you don't have animals. A few other vacuum cleaners that get excellent reviews and are cheaper than the SEBO are:

Robot Mop

Yes, you can get robot mops to automatically clean your hard floors too. A lot of people love their robot mop, but I'm rather attached to steam cleaning my hard floors. I can definitely see the attraction of having my floor mopped while I get on with something else though.

Mint Automatic Mop

Mint Automatic Hard Floor Cleaner, 4200

The Evolution Robotics Mint Automatic Hard Floor Cleaner is by no means the most expensive robot mop you'll find, but it does get very good reviews.

We think it looks very smart and modern too, it's not a cleaning gadget that you need to hide away.

Steam Mop or Steam Cleaner

I'm a big fan of steam cleaning and love my steamer which has a floor cleaning attachment so it can be used as a steam mop. I'm asthmatic and harsh cleaning products tend to make me wheeze, a steam cleaner doesn't need any chemicals and the steam is actually good for asthma too.

I have wooden floors through my kitchen and living room and also in the bedrooms and upstairs bathrooms. They feel wonderfully clean after I've steamed them and I actually enjoy it.

I don't have to lug around an increasingly dirty bucket of water, it's very quick and easy. I also steam clean my rugs - it's great for lifting our hair and fluff. You can also steam clean soft furnishings with some steam cleaners.

You can get steam mops that are specialised for floors, or general purpose steam cleaners with a mop attachment. I have the latter and also use it to clean my bathrooms, kitchen, trash cans, etc. Some even have an attachment for stripping wallpaper if you have plans to redecorate.

Wagner Steam Cleaner

I have this design of steam cleaner with a floor cleaning attachment (you put a washable cloth on it so it's clean every time) and other attachments too.

A Computer Cleaning Gadget

Don't forget to clean your gadgets when you're spring cleaning! You may have seen disposable air cans for blasting dust out of computers and other gadgets. An alternative is an electric duster which is of course reusable.

Metro Computer Duster

Metro ED500 DataVac 500-Watt 120 volt 0.75-HP Electric Blower Duster

Metro Vacuum ED500 DataVac 500-Watt 0.75-HP Electric Duster 120-Volt is great for giving your computers and other electronic gadgets a spring clean.

I can also think of other hard-to reach areas that this neat little gadget would work well for.

A Gutter Cleaning Gadget

Are you finished cleaning indoors? Right, we'll head outside then. How are your gutters looking? Full of leaves? Ours are full of moss. I'll admit that gutter-cleaning is a task i leave to my other half. He likes his gadgets too!

iRobot Looj 330 Gutter Cleaning Robot
iRobot Looj 330 Gutter Cleaning Robot

The iRobot Looj 330 Gutter Cleaning Robot is the first gutter-cleaning gadget. It's not fully automated, you're still going to have to climb up that ladder. But it does make it easier and safer to get your gutters cleaned without calling in a specialist service.
