Updated on November 15, 2012

The best Dehumidifiers for your money (in the UK!)

The point of this lense is to highlight the best dehumidifiers and the best dehumidifier for the money you are willing to spend. I don't like top 10 lists, the reason I don't like top 10 dehumidifier lists is because there's too much choice! Why list the top 10 dehumidifiers when you can list the top 3? That's why I've picked out only the 3 absolute best dehumidifiers. I couldn't whittle it down any further because these 3 dehumidifiers differ differently depending on your problem and size of area.

Dehumidifiers are usually bought when the damage has been done. Condensation and damp cause millions of pounds of damage in the UK every year. To say it can be an expensive problem is an understatement. Luckily it is a not an expensive problem to fix. A quality dehumidifier in the home or office is the solution.

Let's take a look at 3 of the best and most popular dehumidifiers on the market, they are all purposed for different circumstances and operate differently. I will look at the X Dry Home dehumidifier (desiccant dehumidifier), Dimplex Forte dehumidifier (refrigerant dehumidifier) and the Lofty Remcon Home Ventilation system (whole house ventilation system dehumidifier).

Choosing a Dehumudifier
Choosing a Dehumudifier

Why do I need a dehumidifier for the home?

There are many types of dehumidifier, which is the best dehumidifier for me?

There are three main types of dehumidifier available. Refrigerant, Desiccant and whole house ventilation systems. There is also another type called Peltier dehumidifiers but they are expensive and inefficient for most people.

Choosing a dehumidifier depends a lot on location. Ask yourself where you are going to put the dehumidifier, at what time of the year and the size of the space it will be dehumidifying. A lot of salesmen will try sell you the bigger more expensive models which are far excessive for the job at hand.

Dehumidifiers begin to rise in popularity as Summer approaches. Humid days mean Damp, Rot and Condensation come knocking. 3 unexpected and unwanted house guests. Kick them out with the best dehumidifiers that are not going to break the bank.

For more information on choosing a dehumidifier, look towards this, very thorough, page on choosing a dehumidifier. Well worth your 5 minutes.

Tackling the humid weather in the UK in 2012

The ideal humidity level and how to attain it with a dehumidifier

Here are a couple of interesting facts for you regarding air humidity and dehumidifiers:

  • Warm air holds more water than cool air so as air cools relative humidity rises even though the physical quantity remains constant.
  • For every fall in temperature of 20°F/10°C the capacity of the air to hold water is halved. For example air at 80°F with a relative humidity of 50% will reach the dew point, 100% RH when it has cooled to 60°F.

Due to the tumultuous weather and Summer that we've had so far here in the UK the air is very humid. A smart dehumidifier such as the Dimplex Forte (featured in this article) is able to maintain a constant comfortable humidity level in your home or office. It regulates and adapts to the changes in humidity and brings it down to your desired, comfortable level.

What is the ideal level of humidity

The ideal level of humidity is around 50%. At 50% humidity you will be able to live and breathe comfortably and be happy knowing that your home and belongings will be safe from the damage that high humidity levels can cause. Humidity can cause condensation and damp, which as you may know if you're reading this, can be very costly.

I don't agree that the Dimplex Forte is a great dehumidifier as I wrote in my review:

Currently, at the start of 2015, the top 3 domestic dehumidifiers would be the Meaco DD8L, the EcoAir DD122MK5 with the EcoAir Eco DD122FW being the most popular model sold (my reviews of these can be read through the above link).
