Best Multi-Function Tool - A single tool for your home that does just about EVERYTHING

Updated on August 12, 2014

I have been a fan of the Gerber series of multi-function tools for quite a long time.

When I was growing up I was a boyscout, and as you may know one of the essential tenants of being a boy scout is the mantra, "Be Prepared!" With this Gerber tool, it seems that you are always prepared.

I got my first Gerber knife/tool when I first joined the Navy, over 25 years ago. Back then I would use my tool all the time. I probably used some function of my multifunction tool, from the knife, to the scissors, the pliers or the Phillips or flat head screwdrivers at least 30 times a day.

30 times a day, for 20 years in my career. I really wish I had gotten so much use out of anything else I have purchased. I have been through 5 cars since I bought my Gerber knife, and though I have bought more over the years (I keep one in my car, one in my wife's car, one in my bike and two at home) one of the Gerber's I still own and occasionally use is the one I purchased over 25 years ago.

That, my friends, is quality. That is what makes Gerber, without any reservations in my mind the very best multifunction tool around.

What makes this multifunction tool so awesome?

  • Durability
  • Gerber Guarantee. If a blade does break, Gerber will replace it.
  • Small Size. You can use this tool in tight places
  • 11 most useful tools on the planet
  • Blades and pliers lock into place
  • One hand opening.
  • Has optional Belt sheath for anyone who uses this tool on regular basis
  • All tools well crafted and strong.

Gerber tools are great. They can be used everywhere. I firmly believe everyone should have one for their home's for any home improvement type of work as well as one for their car for any emergencies that creep up, and if like me, you ride a bike, having one for your bicycle is also a great idea.

@allpurposeguru lm: Gerber (and Leatherman, another brand that is similar) are close to swiss army knives, but the way a bike is close to a car. These are really TOOLS and are designed for work, where swiss army knives are not really designed to be used day in and day out.

      Thanks for a great comment

If Gerber has been around that long, I"m surprised I wasn't aware of it before. I get some good use out of a Swiss army knife, which is similar in concept, but I don't use tools a lot in general.

They all look so useful it's hard to make up my mind which would be best for me.
