How to Select the Best Steam Iron Based on Customer's Past Experience

Updated on July 5, 2014

Best Steam Irons

There are several steam irons in the market over there. Some are specialised which are meant for industrial type of ironings. Others are general and may be used for domestic purposes. In this lens, I researched 6 steam irons to find out the best one which will work both as specialised as well as one fit for day to day ironing.

As you can judge from the title of this lense, the data is based on the experience of the past users. In my opinion this is the best benchmark for reviewing any product because the product already would have passed through the hands of the customer. The customer describes his actual experience, good or bad.

The biggest advantage of this method is that there are no chances of guesswork and estimation. This eliminates guess judgments up to a greater extent and one can reach the most possibly accurate conclusion.

Researching the Best Seller

A Week of Data Gathering

In order to find the best steam iron, I had to do a considerable amount of research in steam iron niche. The best way to find out which product is the best is to find out what has been the experience of the previous customers. I prefer it over the descriptions of the manufacturer, the advertisement of the vendors or the sales pitched reviews of some sites. Such reviews are based on the personal use of the product and so customers will relate a personal and actual positive or negative experience of the product used. Most of such customers bought these products for their personal use, while a few others bought them as gifts or presents on occasions such as Christmas etc.

The best place I found to analyse and gather actual data from customer review was Amazon. There are a couple of reasons for selecting Amazon. First, they have a large line of steam irons of various brands and models. Second, they have a huge base of actual customers. Last, they have more number of reviews than any other single site, thus providing enough actual data to reach to an objective conclusion.

While reaching at the best Iron, I used the following criteria and factors.

1. No of Reviews

This does not necessarily means that the more the number of reviews, the best is the iron. However, an advantage of taking into account the number of reviews is that we have more chance to reach an objective and impartial conclusion.

2. Average Consumer Rating

This is one of the most effective way to find the best product from a pool. Irrespective of the number of reviews, the average customer rating tells us an overall image of the product.

3. Price

A higher or lower price may not be an equally importan vairable for all the prospective buyers. A certain range of price, however, may be used to consider it a meaningful variable. Only the original prices were considered. Discount or sale prices were ignored. Reason for ignoring them was that such prices may be due to other factors such as surplus stock, fast inventory move over, promotions etc.

4. Descriptions

The manufacturer's descriptions were used only for the features or specifications that could make a difference. All the sales oriented descriptions were also ignored.

5. Score

Each factor was given a score on the scale of 1 to 5

6. Score for all factors was totalled. The Iron which scored the highest was declared as the Best Steam Iron.

The item scored the highest marks according to my above criteria. As this steam iron won the top spot, I thought it appropriate to give it Amazon spotlight. It received 138 customer reviews with an average rating of 4.1. Although, the average rating was a less than Panasonic NI-L46NR and the total number of reviews fell short of the one received for Rowenta DW8080 Pro Master. However, keeping in view all other factors, it was the clear winner.
