Best 5 Blu-ray/DVD-ready Systems For 2013

Updated on November 5, 2013

A Blu-ray/DVD-ready system is a package that has included all the necessary elements so that you can install a Home Theater in your home if you already have a Blu-ray or DVD player and a TV.

Thanks to the HDMI connectivity, the connection between your additional Audio/Video components is greatly facilitated. From speakers to cables, everything is in the package.

Typically in a Home Theater System the speakers are arranged in the following manner: two speakers in front of the viewer, two speakers behind the viewer and a subwoofer.

Optionally, the rear speakers can be wireless, to avoid running wires to them, although they will need a wall power supply to feed the receiver.

The manufacturers strive to make the designs of the speakers more and more compact and with better output power.

If your intention is to build a better system over time, a Home Theater in a box system is not the right choice, because they are not easily upgradeable.

However, for all those that don't have a budget, or that have limited space and want to enjoy the experience of a Home Theater, the prepackaged kit is a great point to start.

Understanding Surround-Sound

To get a surround sound effect, multiple channels of audio are used. The audio channels are reproduced by a set of speakers located conveniently.

The nomenclature used to specify the various surround sound systems indicates the number of speakers of the set, and whether or not it has a subwoofer.

  • 2.0: Normal stereo, two speakers (left and right channels) without subwoofer
  • 5.1: This is the primary format for creating and delivering surround-sound, five main speakers and one subwoofer
  • 6.1: This have an additional surround channel called the back surround channel, that drives one or two speakers situated right behind the viewer
  • 7.1: This is not a true discrete surround-sound format. Some manufacturers derive two back surround channels from the existing 5.1 orĀ  6.1 channel sources
