Cape Cod or Adirondack Chairs for the Garden

Adirondack or Cape Cod Chairs are a familiar site in seaside and resort areas. Their robust, roomy seats and wide armrests invite you to sit and admire the view in comfort, perhaps with a glass of something cool? They are perfect for coastal gardens, leafy suburban yards, or shady rural porches.

Cape Cod or Adirondack Chair

The Cape Cod or Adirondack chair was originally designed by Thomas Lee in 1903 while on vacation in Westport, New York. He wanted suitable outdoor chairs for his home in the Adirondack Mountains. The chair was made from eleven pieces of wood, all cut from one board, with a straight back and seat, angled for the steep mountain inclines. The armrests became a feature of the Adirondack chair.

Today's Adirondack chairs with their flat armrest are perfect for cafes as the armrests serve as supports for coffee cups!
