How To Choose Portable Closets Furniture

Updated on April 30, 2013

What Is A Portable Closet

Are you tired of running out of closet space with nowhere to store extra items? Most of us have too many items to store in our closet so we have to look for alternative storage methods. I simply got tired of using storage boxes to contain my extra garments in the attic. They would constantly smell musty and damp when I went to retrieve them. I got fed up so I decided to look into portable closets. It was the best decision I have ever made and now im gonna show you why.

A portable closet also referred to as a portable wardrobe is typically made of plastic or metal and covered in a canvas material with zippers for closure. They generally come in a plethora of colors including black, white, navy and tan to name a few. Most are designed to stand alone as well as fold up when not being used but often come with rollers to be moved around if need be. NOTE: Wardrobe cabinets made of wood are also usable however portability becomes an issue but ill get to those later.

They typically range in size from 36-60 inches or 3-6 ft tall. You can use a portable closet for all sorts of purposes such as extra clothing storage or even to transfer items from one place to another. They are great for adding extra storage in rooms that are out of the way such as the garage or attic but also used often in spare rooms. Most portable wardrobe closets have zippers to seal out moisture and mildew that can damage valuable clothing.

Portable Wardrobe Closet Uses

Having an extra closet means you can store seasonal or bulky items that take up a lot of space in your personal closet. Sweaters and jackets are an example of this sort of space eating clothing as well as Winter boots and gear. Portable wardrobe closets are also great for spare bedrooms. They not only help you rid of clutter in your room but if you have guests staying over then they would have something to hang their travel clothes in.

You can also put a portable closet wardrobe in the attic and store items that are sentimental to you but you simply never plan to wear. For example I have many suits that my father and mother owned as well as the wedding dress my mother and grandmother got married in. They are sentimental to me and they are very expensive. I consider them family heirlooms so parting with them is simply not in the cards.

This could include a family heirloom like your father or grandfathers polyester suit. Be sure you invest in a portable closet that has vented sides and also a zipper sealed outside to keep moths and mildew from destroying your wardrobe. A portable wardrobe makes for a great closet organizer as well. After all extra closet organizing tools are always a good idea.

Purchasing Portable Storage Closets

The two main things that you need to think about when buying portable wardrobe closets are the size that you need as well as the type of storage space that you require. However, it's also important to make sure that you buy a closet that fits in with the style of your home.

While they are never going to be as attractive as a regular closet you may still want to go with a portable wood closet armoire or cabinet so that it fits in well with the décor of your room.

Portable wardrobes are generally cheap - you can find the smaller models for around $30. However, if you want some extra closet storage space then getting a double portable closet will cost you around $60-$70. Before you begin looking you should try to decide what you want to store in the closet as well as how much room you need. Oh and budget would be a key factor as well.

Wardrobe Armoires

Though a wardrobe armoire is not portable it is worth mentioning they are excellent extra storage closets for bedrooms and spare rooms. They also add nice décor to rooms with elegant wood furniture options that include cherry, mahogany, oak and pine to name a few.

Their sizes range as well as colors and often contain drawers, shelving a rod and some extra accessories storage if needed. Sauder, Ameriwood and Prepac are a few of the name brands that offer excellent wood wardrobe closets to help get your room in order.
