How to Make Your Closet More Efficient and Organized

In my next life, I want to be an interior designer. I love decorating and home decor, taking on projects, and helping others do the same.

Does your closet look like this?

Storage and organization satisfies an essential human instinct - the desire to create order, which explains the universal appeal of "a place for everything and everything in its place." This phrase could not possibly describe me any better!

Creating the right environment for sleep and relaxation is very important, so bedroom storage should be planned with care and attention to detail. The closet is usually the central storage location in the bedroom. Organize your clothes well and you'll find you wear more of them more often. Perhaps it's because you can actually see all of the items in your closet, or perhaps there's just something magical that happens when you organize your closet but you will wear more!

The first step is to take everything out of the closet. Divide clothes into daily or occasional use, seasonal or year-round. Then sort it again into hanging items, stackables, odd sizes, and articles that can be folded, rolled, or collected in smaller containers. Set up a flexible closet storage plan that accommodates your wardrobe and the way you get dressed.

A mixture of hanging and drawer or shelf space will provide the basic storage requirements for clothing. Take into account the ratio of hanging space to shelf space that's available together with the overall space of the closet in order to find a workable storage solution. Sustainable order is crucial to maintaining organization. If you can't continue to keep the order in your closet, then perhaps you need to rethink your plan and create something that's still organized and orderly, but perhaps more simplified - like all skirts together rather than all skirts together and sorted by color.

Getting organized is meant to make your life run more smoothly. If you design your closet to mirror your priorities, everything will fall into place.

Take a look at the wealth of options available at Amazon to inspire your closet storage and organization project.

Hanging Solutions

There are lots of great products available to help make your hanging space more efficient - like the Closet Doubler shown below - if you don't use all of your long-hanging space, then a product like this could double your hanging space without creating a crowded mess.

Closet Configuration Sets

There are several kits available depending on your closet size and these are great because they come with everything you need to get your closet in order and organized and most of these type of kits offer a few different configurations, too, so you can choose what's best for your needs. Below is just one example; there are many more available at Amazon.

Thin Clothes Hangers

These are awesome - they changed my life and created a TON more hanging space in my closet as well as my husband's!!

Seasonal Clothes Storage

If you live up north, or anywhere where you actually have a change of seasons (unlike here in Florida!) then you know how much space your seasonal wardrobes take up in the closet, especially winter clothes. These Space Bags can literally triple your storage space! These also work great for storing blankets and sheets if you need more room in your linen closet.

Tie, Belt and Scarf Storage

You can find lots of hanging storage for ties, belts and scarves that take up a very small amount of space for what they hold. Check out this one:
