Folding Laundry Drying Racks - Collapsible Clothes Airers For Apartments and Small Spaces

Updated on August 29, 2013

Dry Your Clothes Indoors With A Collapsible Clothes Drying Rack Stand

A freestanding clothes airer or mounted indoor clothes line allows you to dry all your clothing inside your own home whatever the weather outside is doing. These compact folding clothes drying racks open up to provide many feet of usable drying space without taking up more than a few feet of actual floor space and are therefore ideal for everything from small apartments and dorm rooms where space is limited, to larger homes without gardens or for when the wet winter weather isn't co-operating to allow you to hang clothes out to dry in the fresh air.

There are numerous different varieties of indoor clothes lines which suit a range of different purposes within the home. An indoor retractable clothes line extends out from its wall mount to provide hanging space when you need it in a laundry room or bathroom if you choose, whereas something like a collapsible drying rack for clothes can be positioned anywhere in the house and folds up flat when you're done so you can stow it away under a bed, in a closet or neatly in your laundry room for when it is needed next.

This lens showcases a variety of indoor laundry drying solutions and puts the spotlight on some of the best rated products within each category. If you are looking to buy an indoor clothes drying stand or retractable laundry drying line for indoors then you have come to the right place!

Collapsible Indoor Clothes Airers With Wide Top Racks

These types of collapsing laundry drying racks have a wide rack on the top which allow multiple items of clothing to hang dry underneath or for larger items like sweaters or something larger like a beach towel to dry flat. the nice thing about these compared to the more vertical indoor washing lines that the horizontal spacing of the bars means wet items do not lean against each other which can be the case with more compact vertical styles. This allows clothing to dry faster but you do need to have a little more space available to set them up.

Moerman 88346 Y-Airer Indoor Folding Clothes Drying Rack (Up to 79 Feet Of Drying Space)
Moerman 88346 Y-Airer Indoor Folding Clothes Drying Rack (Up to 79 Feet Of Drying Space)

This adjustable drying rack offers around 79 feet of laundry drying line space upon which to hang damp washing. This is a big laundry rack easily capable of hanging out a full load of washing and some.

The gull wing arms adjust up and down so you can hang longer dresses, jackets etc. just by raising them up, or drop them down completely for a smaller A-frame laundry rack. In their horizontal position they're perfect for flat drying sweaters and other delicates. Underneath is a smaller drying tray, again perfect for drying delicates and smaller items.

The powder coat finish enables you to use this both outside and indoors where the plastic feet will protect floors from damage. This is a well made and impressively reviewed multi purpose laundry hanging rack which is one of the few which can be used to hang dry longer items on clothes hangers and small items too. Best of all, it folds away to around four inches thick so very easy to store in a closet, under a bed or just simply leant up against a wall or behind the couch.

This adjustable drying rack is both lightweight and sturdy which makes it easy to pull out and move around to a convenient location when you require its services. Its gullwing arms can be raised or lowered to provide either a large horizontal drying area for things which need to lay flat to dry like sweaters and pullovers or raised up to hang long dresses and pants from clothes hangers to dry. It is great for those with limited space because it folds flat but be aware it is still tall when folded. Customers love the stabilty, light weight and versatility of this collapsible drying rack for laundry and generally give it great reviews.

Umbrella Style Indoor Foldable Clothes Dryer Stands

These tall laundry racks are ideal for hang drying larger and longer wet washing items. One of the problems with collapsible compact airers is that it can be difficult to air dry larger and long clothing like dresses, coats, jackets, long skirts and things like that. You end up folding them over several lines which takes up a lot of space. By comparison, these tall laundry airers open out to provide multiple drying bars upon which to hang dry clothing using clothes hangers, or they resemble outdoor rotating carousel laundry lines offering multiple horizontal lines upon which to peg up clothes to dry. The former is a little more compact that the latter but both fold down both at the top and the tripod base to stow away for easy storage.

This indoor tripod style collapsible garment hanging rack can be used both to dry clothing or simply to hang clothing as part of your ironing routine or for storage. It can hold upto 36 items and its long central pole makes it ideal for hanging up lengthy clothing like dresses and ballgowns which end up dragging on the floor or draped awkwardly over other styles of laundry driers. This garment drying stand measures 64 inches tall and 26 inches wide/deep when opened up but both the top drying area and bottom collapse down to leave virtually no footprint at all. You can use it to save money and reduce elelctricity consumption by drying your laundry indoors or put it in your mudroom or entryway for hanging up rain soaked coats, jackets, gloves and footwear to dry out.

Multi-Tier Indoor Clothes Dryer Racks

I tend to think of these as being the traditional style of laundry horse for drying clothes inside the house but that's more because I grew up with this style rather than any real statement of fact. These offer many feet of usable internal washing line in a very compact format which makes them easier to set up and still manouever around even in small dwellings. Some are y-shaped toward the top whereas others have a flat span at top for drying delicates. One of the problems of these and other narrow compact laundry horses is that the horizontal spacing of the laundry lines are quite close together on the vertical and hence longer laundry items can end up touching against each other whilst they dry which can lengthen the drying time. For some, this might be an issue, especially in more humid environments, but for most, it means little more than better organization or just waiting an extra couple of hours.

Extendable Wall Mounted Indoor Washing Lines

A free standing clothes airer folds up neatly and can be stored in even the smallest house, apartment or college dorm but they do take up a fair amount of room when extended to their full size for drying your items. If you floor space is limited or you have problems with children or pets knocking them over, playing with it or brushing their hairy bodies against your drying clothes (at least in the case of pets and not kids...hopefully!) then there are other alternatives which may be more convenient. One such option is to look into the range of indoor wall mounted clotheslines which fold flat against the wall when you're not using them but extend out to provide around 10 -20 feet of line to dry clothes. These telescoping laundry racks are ideal for mounting in a laundry room or utility room and will not look out of place in a bathroom or landing.

The tripod clothes dryer is similar to the one I have. Only it's a cocoon dryer. Dri-Buddy it's called although more often than not I'll just hang the clothes to dry on it if I'm not in a hurry to dry them. Works either way. Great gadget.
