Legend of the Mermaid

Updated on January 11, 2015

Are Mermaids Real?

Do You Believe in Mermaids?

If you find mermaids as fascinating as I do, read on to learn about the legend of the mermaid and learn more about these mystical creatures from the sea. I am one that does believe in mermaids and the proof is in the footage shown below of a real mermaid spotted by a French fisherman. Share your thoughts about what you've seen in the guestbook.

Collecting mermaids is a hobby of mine that I greatly enjoy. I guess you could say I have a fascination for these beautiful, mystical sea creatures. My collection of mermaids continues to grow and includes mermaid statues, mermaid dolls, hand-crafted mermaid jewelry, mermaid art, mermaid lamps, mermaid fountains, mermaid wall plaques, and just about anything I can find that is a mermaid collectible.

About Mermaids

Mythology of Mermaids and Mermen

According to legends, a mermaid is an aquatic creature with the head and torso of human female and the tail of a fish, always wearing long beautiful hair. She can be found in seas and lakes, or lying on a rock and combing her hair with one hand while holding a mirror in the other.

Mermaids were once believes to foretell the future, sometimes under compulsion; give supernatural powers to human beings; or fall in love with human beings and entice their mortal lovers to follow them beneath the sea. In Hans Christian Andersen's book, The Little Mermaid, it is said that Mermaids forget that humans cannot breathe underwater, while others say they drown men out of spite.

The idea of mermaids and mermen, the male equivalent, are based on creatures from Greek and Babylonian mythology: Sirens and Tritons of the Greeks, and the fish gods, who were half human and half fish, from the Babylonians.

Mermaids as Garden Decor

Mermaid Fountains

  • Allowing your thoughts to wonder off into the mystical beauty of the sea, mermaids make a beautiful addition to outdoor or indoor place in your home.
  • You can add a unique, mystical ambiance with a mermaid stature by adding serenity and wonder to your garden, pond, or pool side.
  • Surrounded by water, this mermaid feels right at home. This beautiful mermaid fountain is so beautiful, she's cast in solid brass with a bronze and verdigris finish.

Mermaid Wall Art

You'll find yourself wondering what thoughts are going through this mermaid's mind. She appears so angelic. This is absolutely one of my favorite Mermaid posters! A beautiful addition to any room in the house, mermaid wall art is a beautiful, great quality reproduction vintage poster. This nautical poster will make a fantastic addition to your home d├ęcor and will take your thoughts to a happy place by the seaside.

I have a collection of about 150 mermaids and want to sell the whole collection (moving and have no more room). Anyone interested? It's all or nothing.

@anonymous: No I have not seen these paintings. Off to search for them, if it's mermaid art, I'm interested.

@anonymous: I would suggest that you find an antique appraiser to find out more about your mermaid. Does she have any marks? This is often a clue of where she could have been made. Lots of luck.

I have a very rare Mermaid and I am thinking about selling her or trading her for a windows 7 laptop. She is stunning and I have searched the Web many times and have not found another like her. She is from the 60s and is 4 feet long and was created as a prop item for a restaurant or Bar. How can I find out more about her?

Of course you know that I am indeed fascinated by all things mermaid. I was raised listening to tales that I was named after a mermaid and was I going to be as the legend. The mermaid has always intrigued me for this reason. Beautiful pieces you have displayed.

Wow, loved the mermaid wine glass! And the fountain - we're thinking of building a waterfall next to the pond this summer and I could see this tucked in the corner. Thank you for posting all these ideas. If you would like a few more things, I'm working on products at

I think mermaids radiate great mixture of awe and attraction. Pretty much like femme fatale, do not you think so?

I wish I had $400 right now, I have always wanted a ships figurehead mermaid. There's a shop I've been to a few times that sells them. Way out my price range, though, but so wonderful to look at anyway.
