Create a Fun Backyard

Updated on September 24, 2012

Use your backyard!

Backyards can be boring with tons of useless and forgotten pieces of furniture, old bicycles and other junk. Since the backyard is hidden behind the house, it is not important how it looks. On contrary, what I believe is that everyone who owns a house with a backyard, should see it as a great advantage to create a perfect place to hang out, throw a party or play with your children. Here you can find some ideas!

Choose the type of backyard for you

There are many types of backyards so it is very difficult to say how you should change it. But regardless to this there is the most important question you will nave to answer to yourself: how do I want to use a backyard? Will I be inviting friends over on hot summer nights and throw parties or will I try to spend some time with my children in it? Once you have figured out what you want, it is time to start the project: a user friendly backyard.

Children's playground

When creating a backyard where children will spend a lot of their free time, you should think of making it a fun but safe place. For toddlers, sandboxes are the ultimate thing! You can make your own by using wooden boards and sandbox sand or buy a plastic one. Little children love to spend hours making sand cakes or even sculptures out of sand and water.

Speaking of water - why not have a small swimming pool for children? I know toddlers love to splash in the water!

And a swing! Of course if you have a place for it (and money) - otherwise you could still use the one in the park.

Let your children be creative and play outside! Sand, a shovel, rakes and water can do more than you can imagine. When playing outside, children's minds get challenged and stimulated - they learn about different material, about shapes and improve their kinesiology. Don't you remember how your mom couldn't get you out of the sandbox when you were a kid? I sure do!

The slack line

Have you heard of it? I am sure you did... Remember those people in the park trying to walk on a line attached to trees? The slack line seems to be a fun attractor wherever it appears. It is fun for children and for adults. It turns out to be the ultimate gathering widget for all generations. Grown ups and their children can spend some quality time together when competing in slack line walking.

A Party place

If you are young or at least young at heart, you could imagine your backyard being the perfect place to throw a party or a picnic. There are two basic things you will need to fulfill your dream: a barbecue and a sound system. Everything else can be improvised - you could use your indoor furniture and build your own pergola, or even do without. But a picnic without a barbecue and music? I can't imagine that!

A sound system that won't let you down

I know this sounds like a typical commercial, but I am speaking from my own experience. This is the best thing I have ever bought! The sound is great and can terrify your neighbors when you turn the volume up. The sound stays perfect even if playing music outdoors, the battery lasts for the whole evening and you even get a remote control to keep the party going from a distance. I know it is expensive, but I have to say thai it was worth every penny!

Your dog's favorite place

If you have a dog who likes to play with you or participate at other activities, you could use your backyard to create a playground. You could try agility or rally obedience and improvise when building a polygon. You could, as well, buy professional gear and start the training. I am sure your dog will love it, especially if he is an active kind. If you don't feel like playing with him as much, you could get him an automatic ball launcher - he will be thrilled!

Home agility

Of course it is not the same as taking part in an agility class, but it still can bring fun to you and your dog. You can easily create a polygon in your backyard and make a few rounds and clean it up before the rigorous mother in law comes for a visit. Your dog will love the attention - and you will do a good thing challenging your dog's mind.

The fetch machine

I would love to have one! Unfortunately they are only sold in the USA, so I will keep using my arm until I visit the States. But can you imagine putting this wonder in the middle of your backyard and doing all the work? If you have a workaholic dog, you'll understand me. Of course you shouldn't forget that this machine will never resolve you from walking your dog. The walk will always stay the number one activity for your dog - don't get lazy!

A true garden

If you are more a working person and need some new challenges or if you're a vegan and can't wait to grow your own food, you could make a garden in your backyard. First you have to decide about where you want to have your garden beds, where the path will be and where the ornamental part of the garden will stand. Secondly you will have to choose between many kinds of trees, bushes and flowers. Be careful to keep in mind that it is important to know at which part of the year a particular plant is blooming, which lose their leaves and when they need to be cut. You could, of course leave it all to a professional gardener or a landscape architect. But with a little help of books, you can create your own perfect backyard and enjoy your success! My mom always said that working in a garden strengthens body and mind.

A place to chill out

If you are a more relaxing person, why not create a backyard where you could practice yoga or enjoy a good book? Clean all the junk and the useless stuff you have put there and make space for good energy! Get a lying chair and a sun shade, moan your lawn and plant some undemanding plants, which will provide fresh air and the feeling of nature. Spend your free time with the singing birds and the gentle sun rays in autumn.

What kind of backyard do you imagine to have?

@Mystico: I know how it is... many of us have the same problem. But I think if one at least cleans and tidies up his backyard, he has done a great thing - it doesn't take much.

@rallo-smith: Thanks! Since the fetch machine seems to be such a "hit", I wonder why I have never seen one yet - many people are excited to learn about it in this article. Who will be the lucky guy to get one? :)

Our yard has all of these elements. My oldest daughter used to do agility training with our dog (before she went to college,) so we had an agility course in the yard. We have several gardens and a large patio and fire pit for entertaining. We are out in our yard every day.
