Creating a Shabby Chic Bedroom for your Tween Girl

Updated on February 28, 2012

Creating a Shabby Chic Girls Bedroom

Do you want to help your daughter turn her little girls room into a shabby chic or vintage bedroom? At some point, little girls turn into tweens and they no longer want their pink frilly room, but they're not ready to grow all the way up! A cottage-style bedroom is the perfect compromise -- allowing them to still have some frills but in a more grown-up way. This is a kids bedroom that will last her long after she has grown up!

You can find a great wrought iron bed online, from a reputable sales company like Carolina Rustica.

How to Find Shabby Chic Furniture on eBay

A great place to find vintage furniture is eBay, where there is endless furniture from every time period. I've sold furniture on eBay and bought it as well. As long as you pay attention to whether they will ship it (and at what cost) or if you must pick it up, you can find some fantastic deals here. Here are some of the most recent items listed on eBay

Another Resource for Finding Vintage Furniture

Another great place to find good vintage bedroom furniture for your tween girl is on Craigslist. Again, I've purchased a lot of furniture through Craigslist. Remember you will almost always have to arrange pick-up yourself, but you can always find good deals if you look long enough. I have had the most success with creating a search on a Craigslist app on my phone, so I always get the best deals first.

Shabby Chic Bedding

One of the most important parts of the shabby chic bedroom is the bedding. Look for white backgrounds with little pink or blue flowers to make a beautiful statement piece. You can look for a comforter in a shabby chic style if you're worried about comfort and warmth, but for a more authentic feel, look for a quilt to cover the bed. And while I suggest buying a lot of used items for this room to give a "real" feel, I think you should always buy bedding new.

A Vintage Rug for her Shabby Chic Room

Once you get your tween's shabby chic bedding sorted out, you're going to want to give her a charming oval rug for her floor. Remember those oval braided rugs your grandmother used to have? They are all the rage in cottage-style bedrooms. Here are some great options for keeping your tween's bedroom floor warm and cozy.

Vintage Art for her Shabby Chic Room

Every girl's room needs some artwork. A poster of Team Edward isn't going to look very "at-home" in this tween girls room, so make sure to find some great vintage art for her. I like the look of floral prints in a shabby chic room, but you can choose anything you want, as long as it fits your and your daughter's taste. Another option would be prints of old magazine covers, or even a lesser known Monet. How sweet is that?

Shabby Chic Wire Baskets

What shabby chic bedroom is complete without a few wire baskets to fill? Surprisingly, Amazon has a great selection of these baskets, so it's easy to find something that will fit the style of your daughter's room

Shabby Chic Inspiration

Check out this beautiful page from apartmenttherapy.com about the company Shabby Chic for some decorating inspiration. The style in these photos cannot be denied. The owner, Rachel Ashwell, is also responsible for the Simply Shabby Chic line at Target stores. Hopefully they will be a great source of inspiration for you while you're decorating your daughter's vintage look.

Additional Resources for the Shabby Chic Decorator

There is a lot of information out there on shabby chic/vintage design, and it can be very overwhelming to start. Here are some of the best places I've found for inspiration and information about the shabby chic look.
