Decorating Ideas Using Doilies

Updated on December 9, 2016

Decorate With Doilies!

Decorating ideas using doilies have evolved from the days when people merely covered a table top and the back or the arms of a chair. As an example of the versatility in decorating with doilies, visit Country Living to see how they cleverly used a doily to surround this glass vase.

Whether you're an avid crocheter, thrift shopper or simply love to shop at Amazon, get yourself some vintage doilies, new doilies, second or third hand doilies and make one or two of these projects. I hope to inspire you with these decorating ideas using doilies.

Vintage Doilies Decorate a Lamp Shade

It is very simple to decorate a lamp shade cover with a vintage doily to create lighting that is soft and feminine. You'll need a bare wire lamp shade frame (I stripped an old one), a doily and liquid starch to complete a project like the one pictured in my home.

Draping a vintage doily over this lamp shade is so easy to do......go to the light or the link above to learn how to create ambience with a doily.

Doily Lamp!

I love this clever ambient lighting using doilies. Not just a doily lamp shade, but a doily lamp! The process is deceivingly simple. You can learn to make one here at DOS Family.

Do you think there is a place in your own home for this charming lighting fixture? :)

Doily Table Runner - DIY Decorating Ideas

This idea is genius. It's kind of like the old style crazy quilting only instead of fabric, you'll need a huge bunch of doilies. Grouping together a mix match of doilies is a fabulous decorating idea. Under the Sycamore demonstrates how simple it is to create a doily table runner.

How to put doilies on canvas for display

I love all of the ideas here (especially that table runner). I used to display doilies by stitching them to a quilted fabric within a wooden hoop. Doilies are such works of art. They deserve to be seen. Wonderful decorating ideas. Thank you!

I would, I do, and always have! Not only do I have all my own doilies I've made, I also have my mother's and grandmother's collections of theirs. I also love to buy handmade doilies at thrift shops just because they deserve to be appreciated. You've given some amazing ideas here!

Thought I would stop by to tell you that I used to use doilies as patterns on flat surfaces, and spray paint the patterns onto tables, etc. I would tape off the edges with masking tape and paper, and was please with the results. :D

Decades ago when my home was filled with antique furniture I crodheted many doilies for decorating. Now I only have one or two in the house but you've given me some new ideas for decorating with doilies so I may have to crochet a few.

I'm not the frilly type, but my friend Lillian who lived to be 101 made me several beautiful doilies. I like having them around to remind me of her friendship, and I keep them under glass so my cats don't get any ideas! (That would explain why I'm not the frilly type.)

Great lens! I have a box of doilies that my grandmother and aunt made and I didn't know what to do with them or how to display them. They're so beautiful. Thanks.

I do! I have a lovely collection of vintage doilies and lace that I drape on lamps, wrap up lavender and sweet Annie to scent my linens and I've even stitched a few onto pillow tops. Another creative lens I love.

I still use doilies on the living room, dining room and bedroom tables. Just call me old-fashioned. They are hard to find in stores but I have bought some at craft fairs in the past. :)

I used to use doilies in years past, but now they do not seem practical for my lifestyle sharing a house with children and animals. I still have my lacy stuff I can pull out in a few years when I am a little old lady with an empty nest.

I haven't used doilies because I always remembered them on the backs of chairs and couches, where you could not even rest your head. But I sure do like that lamp idea above...just goes to show that eventually, everything old is new again. Great lens Pam!

I need to get busy and make this one project I saw. You use a lot of doilies to make a wall hanging or curtain by overlapping doilies. I've seen them on Etsy. Just beautiful!
