DeWalt Impact Driver

DeWalt ~ Cordless Impact Drivers and Tools That Rock!

Yellow is one of my favorite colors, especially when it comes to finding the best cordless impact driver.

To be honest, even though I am an avid do-it-yourself guy, I was not aware that there was a tool like this available. I was plugging along with my cordless drill, happy as Mr. Magoo... dumb and clueless.

Then one day while visiting my son, who is a general contractor, I happened to pick up one of his Woodworking magazines and noticed an article about "Best Impact Drivers".

It didn't take much to perk my interest because I am always looking for the next best tool that will make my life easier as I "ease" on into old age.

The tiny yellow tool was very intriguing indeed.

DeWalt Impact Driver - My New Best Friend

My personal experience

I have always been a DeWalt fan. I remember being impressed with one man's forum login name - Ibleedyellow.

Yes, I have bought other brands, but in addition to being a fan of "Yellow tools" I am frugal (some would say cheap), so I used to buy what I felt was the least expensive that would do the job.

However, in my old age, I am gaining some new insight and wisdom some of the time. I am buying tools that will do the job AND do it with quality. For instance, I will not buy another tool with a NiCad battery. My blue cordless screw gun ain't working any more because the battery will no longer hold a charge.

Lithium Ion batteries are the way to go, whether you think yellow or some other tool color (you have noticed the colors of individual brands, right).

So I purchased the DEWALT 12-Volt Max Drill-Driver / Impact-Driver Combo Kit (because, remember, my other one no longer works).

I did a ton of reading and fretting over this purchase. "Should I get the 18-volt package or the 12-volt?"

Well, the short story is I went for the 12-volt because I am getting older and doing a lot less DIY major projects and almost no side work for neighbors. I still can't believe how this little bitty tool can do the work it does. There is almost no effort to drive 5" lag bolts, where with a drill, I had to pre-drill the hole and end up using a crescent wrench to complete the final few turns. (Be sure to watch the video below to see what I mean.)

The only negative I have experienced is with the drill that came with the DeWalt kit. Due to the half-size battery, it will not last as long as a full size battery, and I have had to wait for a charge to finish a couple of jobs that required some heavy drilling.

That being said, I have had no regrets at all with the my choice to go smaller. It seems like we are still in the honeymoon stage, even though it has been nearly a year since the purchase.

DeWalt DCF815S2 Cordless Impact Driver

This little DeWalt Impact Driver is amazing. It has the torque and RPMs to get all but the most difficult fastening jobs done. And it's such a small, light tool that you will wonder if it is really a serious DIY tool.

Just drive one screw or lag bolt and you will see what a super star it is.

Drive fasteners with one hand tied behind your back!

Don't just take my word for it.. check out the other users who have given this tool a 4.8 star rating. They can't all be wrong ;-)

What's Available Online? - Here are some top rated models:

I personally buy all my tools either at Harbor Freight or online at Amazon. Three really great things about Amazon are that

(1.) I get free shipping on everything (I am a "Prime" member)

(2.) There is no state tax (this may not be true everywhere, but it is for me)

(3.) They almost always have what I want (no substitutes necessary)

If you already own DeWalt cordless tools with Lithium-ion batteries, you can save a bunch by just getting the tool (no battery)

DEWALT DC827KL 18-Volt 1/4-inch Lithium Ion Impact Driver Kit with NANO Technology

This is perhaps the most commonly purchased kit.. two batteries and a carrying case.

DeWalt 12 volt Impact Driver Demo

This is me with my DeWalt 12-volt impact driver. I bought the kit which includes the impact driver, a cordless drill, 2 batteries, a charger, and a cloth carrying bag. I have honestly never been happier with any tool purchase.

Going BIG With DeWalt Cordless Tools

I had to mention this option. DeWalt has a kit for heavy duty drilling and fastening. It is 20-volts of power, and it includes a DeWalt Impact Driver along with the cordless Hammer Drill. If you have any jobs that require drilling into aged concrete, this is worth considering.

I have found that my own corded hammer drill has to come out at times to drill into the 20-year old concrete at my house. But that means extension cords. It involves inconvenience and extra time.

Why don't I just buy the DEWALT DCK290L2 20-Volt Impact Driver Combo Kit? All I need is a big enough job - or the demise of my corded hammer drill, and I'm there, baby.
