Helmets that seal the divers head from the water were and are generally worn by professional divers whose occupation involves diving whilst being supplied from the surface. This piece of equipment also allows them see clearly underwater and of course, to breath.

The first Diving Helmet was seen in 1837 after being invented by Augustus Seibe a German born inventor who was living in England at the time.

Commercial Diving consists of several aspects of work. Offshore work - usually in support of gas or oil exploration and production. Inland and Onshore work - an example of this would be work within harbours or lakes. I know there's a History of Diving Museum somewhere in the Florida Keys, where they probably have stuff like these amazing old diving helmets.

I've always been curious as to how it would feel to wear one of these under water.

These older ones were quite heavy. My instructor owned an underwater salvage company and was always looking for help in murky waters. Wasn't much fun just barely being able to see in that stuff. Like scuba a whole lot more. LOL

What an awesome item. Just so you know, on my Gift shop for sailors and fisherman lens, I have an image from AllPosters that has a mermaid with a deep sea diver (with the helmet gear). Maybe, you might also like to include that picture in this article, since it would fit thematically. Take care now!

A couple of years ago, my husband and I went to one of those enormous seafood buffets that dot the Myrtle Beach landscape. While the buffet was nothing special, the collection of diving helmets and other sea-related items was iimpressive! These are really cool!

Returning for another peek in at this diving helmet fascination, they do make lovely decorator items that are unique and a person could make up all sorts of stories about their deep sea diving exploits.

Making my way though all your wonderful lenses. It's going to take a while. Loved this one. I never thought of diving helmets as decorative but some of the brass ones are just beautiful.

My grandma has an old photograph of a diver wearing one of these old fashioned suits, he is going into Ramsgate harbour. If I had a bigger bathroom maybe I would do a diving theme and have one of these helmets as decor.

I remember seeing Cuba Goodings, Jr. portraying a Navy diver who broke the color barrier to become a certified Deep Sea Diver...the helmet worn in the movie was just like the above replicas...great lens on some historic diving gear.

it's funny. as i write this comment, i am watching a scene whereby the heroine is almost drowned because the ship where she is in sank. if only she had these helmets. anyway, she did not drown, she was saved.
