DIY Laundry

Laundry Room Goodies to DIY and BUY

Having a DIY laundry room with all the trimmings is something I may never have, but I enjoy planning my dream laundry just in case. Living in Hawaii in a vintage and very small plantation-worker style cottage, it is only practical the washer and dryer are kept outside of the house. I feel fortunate at least they are under cover on our brick paver lanai, but still they ARE outside.

I've collected a whole page full of ideas for my dream DIY laundry, which I'd like to share with you. You'll find sections covering things like how to make detergent, diy laundry organization, sorting clothes and a whole section on laundry drying racks. Perhaps your laundry area needs some sprucing up too? For now though I suppose my washer and dryer will remain outside next to the water heater, but someday...........Well, a girl can dream, can't she?

The clothespin bag in the picture is my design and coincidentally the clothesline happens to be my most frequent method of clothes drying. As long as it's not raining, I have to take advantage of the tradewinds here in Hawaii and dry my clothes the old fashioned way. Maybe the money I'm saving on my electric bill will help me save faster for my future dream laundry room? :)

Welcome to my DIY laundry page!

DIY Laundry Drying Rack #1

This was one of the first diy laundry drying racks I put on my to do list. It was designed by Kate at Centsational Girl. She made it very affordably and posted an excellent tutorial with pictures so you can make one of your own to put in your diy laundry room.

You can't see it in this particular picture, but Kate attached a window sash lock at the top of the laundry drying rack to hold it in place when not in use. How clever!

Seattle resident Erica grabbed a freecycled wooden baby playpen and turned it into this wall-mounted clothes drying rack for her laundry area. I think it's brilliant and I'm sure you will too. Read about it here.

for the DIY Laundry Room with little space....

What do you do with an old wooden rung ladder? Well, Bec at Little Lucy Lu painted hers and hung it from the ceiling to serve as a clothes drying rack for her small laundry room. Her total cost for this DIY laundry project was less than $10. That's the kind of diy project that fits my budget. :)

I recently treated myself to this absolutely wonderful umbrella style clothesline you see picture above. I consider it part of my extended DIY dream laundry.

Before we had steam irons, this is the way we got wrinkles out of our clothes. A hot iron, use the DIY clothes sprinkler to sprinkle water over the clothes, then iron. Viola! :)

Want your own clothes sprinkler? You can buy vintage clothes sprinklers on Ebay. See below.

IF you have to use the dryer, use a ball of aluminum foil wadded up in the dryer instead of fabric softener sheets. I learned this tip online. It really does work great!

Having a folding table in my DIY laundry dream room is a luxury I would be thrilled about. When not in use, I could simply fold it down and let it hang against the wall.

Instructions found on Family Handyman

I've always wanted a laundry chute in my home. Considering I live in a one story cottage with no basement, I don't think that's going to happen. However, you never know what life may have in store so I've added the tutorial for this diy laundry chute to my laundry room wish list.

It's important to check with your local building codes before installing any diy laundry chute. Some areas may prohibit their installation due to local fire codes, etc. So check with the local experts first.

I couldn't resist visiting your laundry again. I came from a similar laundry background on my last visit, but am now of the brand new renovated dream laundry world, and definitely don't want to create laundry envy, but merely to assure you that anything, absolutely anything is possible!

A great sound system to fill the room with music. Laundry can be monotonous. Let there me be music.

It's surprising how important it is to have an easy working laundry room. We had several DIY features in ours.

It's a little sad isn't it when we reach the stage in life where we dream of the perfect laundry, but I am right there with you!

I don't currently have a dream laundry area. Actually, my washer and dryer are in storage at the moment. So, perhaps my dream laundry will be as simple as being reunited with my appliances. I love all of your featured items (especially that hanging rack ladder and the fold-down table).

Thank you for sharing this. I also live in Hawaii but we are in the city. We have very little space and I'm super excited about making a dryer rack out back. We still have the parts from a crib tucked away and now I know what to do with them!

I would love to have a laundry chute! I don't have a good place for one. The laundry would drop onto the furnace. That won't work!

Great lens. I can remember my mother hanging clothes outside in the winter, when I was a child, and bringing them back in frozen. Glad we finally got a dryer. But love these DIY drying racks.

I have no laundry at the moment as we live in an RV. However, I have made use of a drying rack when my dryer broke and saved a lot of money on electricity. My dream laundry, if I still lived in a house, would be a huge shower room with washer and dryer and a place to put the clothes away. They never seem to get to the bedrooms so why not get dressed in the shower/laundry area?

You've described everything I want, but I don't have room for it. My laundry area is also outside. So I'll keep dreaming.

Ha! I'd like to HAVE a laundry room! My house is 157 years old and the laundry is in the hallway by the kitchen. As of today alone, the pool pump is dead as is the hot tub heater. Ah, but I love this old house anyway. In my next life, I want central air conditioning! Great article though. Loved reading it. Blessed.

I am very lucky to have a nice laundry room on the main floor of our house (something we never had before). But, I miss the fold down ironing board I had in my first studio apartment! And, I'd forgotten all about laundry chutes! Don't need one, but it's a fun memory!

Gives me some motivation to dry my clothes on a rack more often. And I surely would like to have a drop-down ironing board.

I love all of these options. I use an Ikea folding laundry rack. Love it but would really love the tradewinds! I rarely use my dryer.
