Double Daylilies - Hemerocallis

Although double daylilies do exist in the wild, these are sterile, and today's doubles have been bred from single daylilies. There are now nearly 3000 of them and what they lack in simple elegance they make up for with brighter colors and fuller flowers. Here are some of the best and the most popular.

Note that many double dayliles will produce single flowers only, at the start of the season or in cool weather.

Hemerocallis 'Siloam Double Classic'

Double Pink Daylily

One of the best and most popular of the Siloam Dayliles, 'Siloam Double Classic' has lovely double pink fragrant flowers, tinged with green and frilled at the edges. Flower diameter is 5" (12.5cm). They are

Flowers appear midseason, with an diurnal, extended habit, and this is a diploid daylily.

Siloam Double Classic won the Stout Silver Medal in 1993.

Hemerocallis fulva Kwanso

Double Orange Daylily

A very old and well known variety, 'Kwanso' has large (4.5", 11cm), double orange flowers with reddish eye zones and ruffled and orange-yellow edges. Hot colors which look great with black or dark red daylilies. It's also good for ground cover and large drifts, although it can be invasive, it's roots spreading underground.

Hemerocallis Kwanso flowers midseason, and it's diurnal, dormant and diploid.

Hemerocallis 'Vanilla Fluff'

Pale Yellow Double Daylily

Delicious fulsome double daylily with frilled vanilla petals and a darker, pale yellow, eyezone.

Flowers are large - 6" (15cm), midseason,- fragrant and diurnal. Foliage is dormant, and scape height is 34" (85cm).

'Vanilla Fluff' won the Ida Munson Award best double award in 1988.

Hemerocallis Scatterbrain

Double Peach Daylily

Award-winning peach double daylily with a pale green throat. 'Scatterbrain' is also slightly fragrant, semi-evergreen, diurnal and a midseason bloomer.

Scape height is 32" (80cm) and flowers are large - 6" (15cm).

Hemerocallis 'Double Cutie'

Reblooming Double Yellow Daylily

'Double Cutie' is a reblooming double yellow daylily. Small, it has flowers of only 4" (12cm) and a scape height of only 13" (32cm). Low-growing dense evergreen foliage makes it especially good for ground cover.

Hemerocallis 'Double Cutie' flowers first midseason, with further re-bloomings.

Hemerocallis 'Double Passion'

Reblooming Double Evergreen Daylily

This is an unusual tall pinkish brown double daylily with a golden throat and evergreen foliage. it flowers early and then reblooms.

Flowers are 6" (15cm), while scape height is 25", 62cm), and Double Passion is also evergreen, diurnal and diploid.

Hemerocallis 'Jo Barbre'

Yellow Double Daylily

Canary yellow double daylily with a greenish throat, slender petals and an attractive open form. Flowers are 5.5" (14cm) wide and scapes are 23" (57cm) tall.

'Jo Barbre' is a mid-season, diurnal, bloomer with semi-evegreen foliage.

Hemerocallis 'Mama's Egg Pie'

Reblooming Double Spider Daylily

Introduced in 2008, this one of only a few double spider daylilies, and the only registered reblooming one. Big and tall, it has 50" (125cm) scapes and 7" (17cm) flowers, which are golden yellow and fragrant.

Mama's Egg Pie Daylily flowers first midseason with a extended habit, and it's semi-evergreen and diploid.

      I enjoy daylilies too and the doubles are an extra delight. I see you have other gardening articles. I'll have to read them.

      It's always nice to have a garden especially when you work so hard at it. I always like to add a little color to the mix as well and Growing Daylilies Together make a great companion plant for the garden. A little known fact is that the daylily flower is edible so it makes a great garnishment for a fresh salad.
