Eco-Friendly Green Living Tips

Updated on September 28, 2011

When you throw something away, there is no ‘away’, as it all remains on the earth. As part of our daily routine, we use many indispensable plastic items for which we currently have no alternatives, like a toothbrush, toothpaste tube, razor, body & hair-care products, mobile phones & other electronic items etc. These items add to the growing pile of non-biodegradable waste that we generate as active, urban residents.

To make our planet a sustainable one, we need to make everyday living eco-friendly. Read on to see how you can make a world of difference by employing a few but effective modifications in your habits.

Carry Reusable Bags: Use them diligently to avoid taking plastic bags from retail stores. You’ll save a minimum of 300 to 500 plastic bags per year from choking the planet. Over a ten-year period, the figure would add up to 3,000 to 5,000 bags per person.

Carry Reusable Water Bottles: A bottle of water purchased everyday means 365 plastic bottles per person, per year, choking our planet earth. If a family of four buys a bottle of water daily for each family member it would amount to 1,460 plastic bottles trashed.

Walk and Save Fuel: You’ll be amazed how quickly you can walk to locations that seem to take ages by car. It’ll save you the time and stress of finding a parking lot and worrying if your car is safe. Your health will improve and fuel bill will reduce. Welcome to a happier and healthier you!

From Kitchen to Compost: Generally, most of us urban residents dump kitchen waste like vegetable and fruit skins in a plastic bag, then we tie it up before it is collected and transported to the landfill in the same condition. Biodegradable material is trapped into a non-biodegradable bag. Start using compost bins to convert your chicken wet waste into rich compost. You’ll save plastic bags, fuel and effort that would otherwise be needed to collect the garbage and transport it to landfills where it will end up choking the planet.

Gift Green: Make gifts and cards from recycled materials. Ditch fresh / disposable gift wrappers and use newspaper, magazine paper or cloth to wrap gifts with creativity and accessorize also with creativity. The joy of creativity is indescribable.

Give and Receive: If you keenly observe, you’ll find that there’s a lot of unused stuff lying wasted in your household, like food, clothing, gadgets and other everyday items. Keep the good karma flowing by giving generously and graciously. Give them to family, friends, charitable organizations, under-privileged folks and others.

What’s good for the planet is great for us too. In each of the examples discussed here, we see that eco-friendly living yields rich rewards in terms of health, joy and monetary benefits. Make “eco-friendly green living” a priority in your life.

Thanks LuxmiH for stopping by! Recycling is very economical if one can do it properly and it's necessary for the well-being of our planet.

Very useful, constructive information. We are using kitchen scraps, (non meat) to make compost. Between that and everything that can be recycled, it is amazing how much this cuts down on what we send to the dump. Good, makes sense Hub
