Feng Shui Colors, Uses and Cures

Feng Shui Colors and How to Use Them

Want to learn more about Feng Shui colors and how to use them in your home?  In this lens I will teach you how to create good Feng Shui using a color bagua to help you gain prosperity and peace in your life.  You wil also learn how to use a Feng Shui bagua to determine which areas of your home coorespond with the 9 different areas of life.  Feng Shui is the Chinese art or practice of creating harmonious surroundings that enhance the balance of yin and yang by use of colors and placement.  In Feng Shui, different colors represent different areas of your life.

The Bagua: Direction and Feng Shui Colors

The color chart above is a colorized version of a Feng Shui bagua. A bagua helps you determine what part of your home cooresponds with a specific area of your life. Learning how to use a Feng Shui bagua can help you to determine what changes need to be made to your environment to help you improve your quality of life and increase your happiness.

A typical bagua is shaped like an octogon. However, because most of us do not live in houses which are octogonal, I have made it easier for you by turning this into a square. The bagua is a representation of the nine different portions of life: wealth & prosperity, fame & reputation, love and relationships, family & physical health, spiritual health & well being, children & creativity, knowledge & wisdom, career and travel & helpful people.

Using this bagua is simple. Draw for yourself a blueprint of each level of your home. Make sure to include on your blueprint exactly where your front door is located. This is important because the front door of your home is where all of the good energy, or "chi" will enter. Overlay your bagua over your blueprint so that the bottom edge of the career section of your bagua is in line with the front entrance to your home. Notice which areas of your bagua overlap which rooms in your home.

Now that you know what different areas of your home control which areas of your life, let's take a closer look at feng shui colors and their uses.

To overlay the bagua on your home or work floor plan, stand at the threshold of the door facing in and hold the diagram so that the blue, black, and gray guas are closest to you. Pretend you can draw a line straight across the front of the home where the door is: that would be the line at the bottom of this color chart.

Oh NO! The Bagua areas fall OUTSIDE of my home!

What do I do now???

First of all...DON'T PANIC ;)

It is very common for areas on your bagua to fall outside of the walls of your home. This could also be why these particular areas of your life are in the state they are, get it?

Just make sure that you align the career section with the front door and enlarge the bagua so that the back wall of your home aligns with the top of the bagua (Fame & Reputation area).

So, if an area falls outside the bagua...what can I do?

This is where Feng Shui colors get fun! Plant flowers which represent the colors in that area...it may be the perfect place for hanging metal wind chimes or putting your fire pit. Create a romantic garden in your Love & Relationship section. Use your imagination and make sure to keep your bushes and trees trimmed and neat to allow the Chi to flow free. N7Q984DJ286Q

I've created this section for you to ask any Feng Shui questions. Are you having a particular delima you need help with? Feel free to post your question here and check back often - I'll be answering any questions on a daily basis.

The 'wealth' color, purple falls in my children's bathroom. Do I have to do the entire

room in purple or can I just accent? Is this true using the Bagua throughout the home?

I too am a bit unsure how to use this with the design of my home. Because we enter in the laundry room which is a short narrow hallway that connects the house to the garage. So do I line the bottom of the career section up to the laundry room door or do I line it up with the door that actually goes into the house?

I have a stove that places the cook's back to the door. I'm about to place a rectangular mirror behind the stove to cure this and also double the burners but was wondering if it's ok for the mirror to reflect my refrigerator. The fridge is behind the cook and to one side diagonally across from the stove. I know that it's desirable to reflect the burners since it doubles them but if some of the refigerator is reflected as well is that an energetic conflict ? I can hang a smaller mirror so that it reflects the refrigerator as little as possible (just the edge from certain views) though I'd have no view of the door, or I could hang a wider mirror which would help me see some of the door but also much more of the refrigerator. Any thoughts?

On a sillier note, wondering if the fact that the mirror would reflect shelves of food would contribute to gaining weight!

@PolarisSells: Thank you so much for your kinds words!

Magnets really aren't associated with Feng Shui however the studies that have been done have yielded some interesting results when it comes to the flow of energy. It may be worth looking into.

Mirrors are a very powerful way to direct chi and if not used properly can actually hurt the flow in your home. When used properly, mirrors can actually increase the flow of chi throughout your living space and provide a cure for areas with bad Feng Shui.

      Hope this helps!

@JoshuaH: Hi Joshua! It sounds like you have a beautifully unique shaped house! As long as you have your front entrance lined up with your career section you are fine. Enlarge the chart as much as you need to in order to have the Career section line up with your front door and your Fame & Reputation section line up with the back of your home. This will leave areas of your chart over-laping outside the walls of your house - and this is okay.

Looking at this, it seems that your love & relationships, children & creativity and travel & helpful people areas all fall outside your home. This is okay - you should enhance these areas outside to help to keep these areas flowing strong! In your Love and Relationship area you can create a romantic garden. Think roses or other pink, red or white flowers. In your Children & Creativity consider hanging a metal wind chime. In your Travel & Helpful People you can have a metal water feature with a ball in the middle symbolizing the earth (travel).

I hope this helps! Let me know how it goes!

I am just not getting how to align this. I got that I should align the bottom edge of the chart with the front of my home that has the front door, but if I align the career section with my front door, whole sections of my home will not be in the chart. Even if I enlarge the chart, there will be sections of my home that extend 'behind' the imaginary line that have draw at the threshold, because portions of my home extend 'backward' from where the entrance is located. I am not sure if I am describing this well. Imagine Utah. If I stand at the indent in the north/east facing west, that is my threshold. So nearly half of my home is extending 'backward' from the threshold, and there would be no places in my home that are covered by the pink, white, and gray sections of the chart. This is not a perfect description but the best I can give you. Thanks for any help you may have.

@junecampbell: Absolutely! Chi is the essence of Feng Shui. When the Chi is allowed to flow freely you will find that the areas of your life become significantly better. However, stagnent Chi or slow-flowing Chi can cause these areas of your life to stagnate and almost come to a stand still. I love Tai Chi - it's been so long since I've practiced...thank you for inspiring me again!!

I'm just curious -- do you know if Feng Shui is based on chi energy? I practice Tai Chi (which is a Chinese martial art that uses chi energy) and I'm wondering about a possible connection.

    Wealth and Prosperity

    Purples, Blues and Reds

    WEALTH AND PROSPERITY

Feng Shui Colors: Purples, Blues and Reds

Feng Shui Elements: Wood and Water

If you want to gain more money or prosperity in your life, it's time to pay some special attention to your Wealth and Prosperity portion of your home. The Wealth & Prosperity area is located in the rear left section of your home. In Feng Shui wealth can indicate more than just monitary gains. Wealth means abundance. Enhancing this area of your home will help you to maximize your abundance, prosperity and happiness.

The Feng Shui colors which will enhance your wealth and prosperity are purple, blue and red. Consider painting this room a shade of purple. Make sure to include these colors in the elements in the room as well: in bedspreads, curtains, towels, furniture, etc... The more you can incorporate the colors - the more focused your Chi in that room will be and thus, the more wealth and prosperity you will attract.

If there is a specific type of wealth and prosperity you are attempting to attract such as a new job or a raise, get a red envelope. Write down your intentions put them in the envelope in the room. This will help to attract good Chi to your intention and help you begin to see results. Also placing symbols of wealth and prosperity in this room can help to attract more!

Always keep this space neat and orderly. Avoid clutter as this serves to slow down and sometimes even stop the flow of Chi in a room. Practice the motto: A place for everything and everything in it's place.

    The Happy Buddah

The Happy Buddah has long been a symbol of wealth and good fortune. Put a Happy Buddah in your home in your Wealth seciton of your bagua to attract good luck and prosperity.

    Fame and Reputation

    Reds & Oranges

    FAME AND REPUTATION

Feng Shui Colors: Reds and Oranges

    Feng Shui Elements: Fire

If you want to gain respect in your job, increase your courage or change how other percieve you, you should enhance this area of your home. There is no accident about the location of this area on the Feng Shui bagua. This is the power position in any room. Think for a moment about judges, kings and other persons of power such as clergy; when they hold "court", this is the portion of the room that they usually occupy.

The Feng Shui colors which will enhance your fame and reputation are red and orange. Consider painting this room a shade of red or having a red or orange accent wall. Make sure to include these colors in the elements in the room as well: in bedspreads, curtains, towels, furniture, etc... The more you can incorporate the colors - the more focused your Chi in that room will be and thus, the fame and reputation you will attract.

When attempting to attract fame it can help to get a red envelope. Write down your intentions put them in the envelope in the room. This will help to attract good Chi to your intention and help you begin to see results. Also placing symbols of fame and reputation in this room can help to attract more, especially candles! Fire is the element for fame and reputation and will maximize your Chi! Having a fireplace in this room is definitely a bonus!

Always keep this space neat and orderly. Remove all items which do not represent the person you want to be known as. Only keep items in this room which help to portray the person you intend to be. Avoid clutter as this serves to slow down and sometimes even stop the flow of Chi in a room. Practice the motto: A place for everything and everything in it's place.

    The Red Envelope

Probably the most powerful color in Feng Shui is red. The ancient tradition of using red envelopes was started in China many centuries ago. Red envelopes are an honorable tradition which are used to enhance the power of Chi (good energy) to maxamize abundance and happiness. These envelopes can also be used to keep away negative Chi (bad energy).

If there is a particular situation you would like to see improved such as finding a job or healing a relationship, you can write your intentions down on a piece of paper and put it into a red envelope. You can then place this envelope into the room in your house where your bagua indicates (e.g. Need a new job? Put the red envelope in your Career portion of your home). You will find that shortly after doing this - prospects and avenues open up to you to help you achieve what you are asking.

    Try it!

    Love and Relationships

    Pinks, Reds & Whites

    LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS

Feng Shui Colors: Pinks, Reds and Whites

    Feng Shui Elements: Fire

The love and relationships portion of your Feng Shui bagua can be enhanced to help you find a soul mate or to enrich your current relationship. The love and relationships area is located in the rear right hand corner of your home. In Feng Shui relationships can mean more than just romance, it can also pertain to relationships with other such as a boss or other friends and family.

The Feng Shui colors which will enhance your love and relationships are pink, red and white. Think Valentine's Day...pink is the universal color of Love. Paint your walls a delicate shade of pink or put up pictures in the room which epitomize the concept of love to you. Use throw pillows with pink, red or white in them. The more you can incorporate the colors - the more focused the Chi in that room will be. This will create a calm, relaxing environment which brings you joy.

Because fire is the main element of your love and relationships section, having a fireplace in the room will help attract good Feng Shui. Having candles in this room is also beneficial. Avoid putting anything blue or water related in this room as water will extinguish fire and stifle your progress.

If you are looking for a soul mate, write down all the qualities you deserve out of a mate on a piece of paper and put it in a red envelope in your room. This will help to attract good Chi to your intention and help you begin to see results. Also placing symbols of love in this room can help to attract more. Hearts and words of love can really get the Chi flowing.

    Family and Physical Health

    Greens

    FAMILY AND PHYSICAL HEALTH

    Feng Shui Colors: Green

    Feng Shui Elements: Wood

The family and physical health portion of your Feng Shui bagua can be enhanced to help you maximize your odds to beat an illness or conceive children. It can also be used to increase the strength of your family or to heal the heart when a loved one is lost. The family and physical health area is located just left of the center of your home. In the Chinese culture, family ancestry was EVERYTHING. They considered your lineage to be the core base upon which your life would be focused. Therefore, it was important to them to show honor and respect to all family members; dead or living.

The Feng Shui color which enhances this area is green. Anything earthy as ancient Chinese culture believed that their family ancestry was closely bound to the earth. This is why wood is the element for this portion of your bagua. Green paint on the walls or green accents in room are a good idea. This is also a good room to hang pictures of your own family ancestors.

Always keep this space neat and orderly. Only keep items in this room which help to portray a healthy life. Avoid clutter as this serves to slow down and sometimes even stop the flow of Chi in a room. Practice the motto: A place for everything and everything in it's place.

    Spiritual Health & Well Being

    Yellows & Earth Tones

    SPIRITUAL HEALTH & WELL BEING

Feng Shui Colors: Yellows and Earth tones

    Feng Shui Elements: Earth

The spiritual health and well being portion of your bagua is located smack dab in the center of your home. This is probably the most important area in your home that you need to have good Feng Shui and Chi flow. The center of your home is considered the home's heart and keeping that heart balanced and in good health will allow all other areas of your life to get a boost.

The Feng Shui color which enhances this area is yellow or earth tones. The element for this area is earth. Paint the walls an earthy tone. Choose to use stone floors in this room. Decorate with earthy items such as ceramic vases or clay pots.

Always keep this space neat and orderly. Only keep items in this room which help to portray a healthy life. Avoid clutter as this serves to slow down and sometimes even stop the flow of Chi in a room. Practice the motto: A place for everything and everything in it's place.

Use Yellow to Increase Spiritual Health

    Children & Creativity

    White & Pastels

    CHILDREN AND CREATIVITY

Feng Shui Colors: White and Pastels

    Feng Shui Elements: Metal

The Children and Creativity portion of your Feng Shui bagua can be maximized to bring positive Chi energy to your children and increase your own or their creative abilities. This area is located just right of center in your home. Enhancing this area can have positive effects on your children and can even help you to conceive children.

The Feng Shui color which enhances this area white and pastel colors. The element for this area is metal. This would be the ideal room to put a child's bedroom or a hobby or crafting room. Use pastel colors in this room to inspire the creative side. Metal picture frames with pictures of your children help to focus good Feng Shui upon them. Metal tables or furniture with metal accents or trim are good additions to this room. If this is a bedroom, consider a brass headboard.

Always keep this space neat and orderly. Avoid clutter as this serves to slow down and sometimes even stop the flow of Chi in a room. Practice the motto: A place for everything and everything in it's place.

    Knowledge and Wisdom

    Blues & Greens

    KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM

Feng Shui Colors: Blues and Greens

The knowledge and wisdom area is located in the front left hand corner of your home. This area of the bagua expresses our desire to understand more - to be more - and to learn more. It encourages us to constantly keep in a state of learning and growing; helping us to turn our focus inward. This section can be enhanced to help you to turn your focus inward and make better decisions. This would also be an ideal room to have a home office or meditation room.

The Feng Shui colors which enhance this area are blues and greens. Blue in particular helps us to focus inward as it is a calming color which helps you have good Chi flow. Greens are representative of growth and health. Put items in this room which represent clear wisdom and knowledge to you.

Always keep this space neat and orderly. Avoid clutter as this serves to slow down and sometimes even stop the flow of Chi in a room. Practice the motto: A place for everything and everything in it's place.

Items to Enhance Knowledge and Wisdom

    Career

    Black and Dark Blue

    CAREER

Feng Shui Colors: Black & Dark Blue

    Feng Shui Elements: Water

The career portion of your home is it's front door and the area surrounding it. It is here where you can enhance your career portion of your Feng Shui bagua. In order to attract good Feng Shui, it has always been advised that you paint your front door red. This is because red invites good Chi into your home.

The Feng Shui colors which enhance this area are black and dark blues. The element for this area is water. This would be the ideal room to put a water feature such as a small fountain. Choose to use black picture frames in this area. It is extremely important to keep this area of your home neat and orderly. Avoid clutter as this serves to slow down and sometimes even stop the flow of Chi in a room. Practice the motto: A place for everything and everything in it's place.

    Travel and Helpful People

    Grays & Silvers

    TRAVEL AND HELPFUL PEOPLE

Feng Shui Colors: Grays and Silvers

    Feng Shui Elements: Metal

The travel and helpful people portion of your bagua is located in the front right hand corner of your home. Enhancing this area can help you attract the right people at the right time into your life. It can also help to keep you safe if you travel for a living.

The Feng Shui colors which enhance this area are gray and silver. The element for this area is metal. Paint the walls a light gray and use silver or chrome around the room. Keep a silver wish box in this room. Put into this wish box the intention to keep yourself open to the right people coming into your life at the right time. Keep this area of your home neat and orderly. Avoid clutter as this serves to slow down and sometimes even stop the flow of Chi in a room. Practice the motto: A place for everything and everything in it's place.

Use Silver to Increase Travel and Helpful People

Interesting! Feng shui is always an interesting subject because it is about achieving harmony and balance with your environment. The only problem for me is that I find it a little too complicated because of the different schools of thought. That got me totally confused!
