The Best Cutting Boards

Updated on November 2, 2010

One of the things that can turn very tedious meal preparation into a fun experience is a good quality cutting board to help you with your cooking. A cutting board is as essential as your Chef's knife and they are one of the essential pieces of equipment in any kitchen. In fact - your kitchen will never be complete without one - or several.

The ease with which you complete simple cutting and chopping tasks depends on the quality of the appliances and equipment you have in your kitchen. A good chopping board can make your cooking fun and easy, while a bad one will make it frustrating.

Check out these five best selling cutting boards on the market today. I have personally tested and can recommend each and every one.

Oxo Good Grips 7-1/2-by10-1/2-Inch Cutting Board, Black

Oxo Good Grips 7-1/2-by10-1/2-Inch Cutting Board, Black

This "Oxo" cutting board is one of the best cutting boards available. It is made from a thick polypropylene material, is non porous and odor resistant. Most reviews are centered on the durability of the product, with good reason. It is resistant to deep knife scratches and maintains the sharpness of your kitchen knives. You can chop, dice and mince to your heart's content and this board will take whatever you throw at it.

One of the best features of this product are the excellent edge grips. They keep the board in place while cutting. It cleans up extremely easily and does not discolor fast even when you use it for cutting things like red bell peppers.

All in all, one of the best boards available and great value for money. Amazon usually sell then for less than $10.

Architec Gripperwood 10-by-15-Inch Gourmet Sheesham Cutting Board

This is a natural colored wooden cutting board that you could even use for serving food on if you chose to. It is made from Indian "Sheesham" wood, which is of high density and quality. It is a wood that has a natural resistance to bacteria.  The soft non-slip corner pads also keep the wood secured on any surface while cutting. It really is a good cutting board, and a very durable one at that.

However, this is not the kind of cutting board that you could dump into your dishwasher and let it do its thing. This high-quality chopping board requires hand washing only otherwise it will become very short lived. You would really do not want to spoil the beautiful marble design of the wood by throwing it into a dishwasher. More expensive than the ever-practical Oxo, it serves two purposes - as a serving dish as well as a cutting board if you choose.

Well worth the $30 investment.

Progressive International Cutting Board

This is a larger sized cutting board. It is a very durable board and another one made up of polyethylene material. It is a great everyday board, functional, inventive and a fun tool for those who like to practice. It is just a simple cutting board and nothing fancy, but I like tools that do the job they were designed for.

This one is dishwasher safe (as are all polythene boards) and the board measures 11 by 17 inches making it great for those who prepare large quantities of food regularly. It also has a trough edge design that allows you to control spills or juices from fruits or meats when cutting.

Overall, the product is nice and functional and another good-value-for-money board, as Amazon usually have them on sale..

MIU Flexible Cutting Board, Set of 5

MIU Flexible Cutting Board, Set of 5

This set of 5 boards are color coded, the idea being to use different colors for different groups of food in order to reduce the possibility of food contamination . The size is just about perfect for most users, not too small nor too big for a cutting board. They are cheap and thin, the idea being to use them to protect your knife and counter top.The flexible design allows you to easily scoop up and drop your cut food directly into a bowl or to a pan.

The mot useful feature of this product is the color coding. You use different colors for each food group, like red for meats and green for veggies. The flexible plastic is also dishwasher safe, making it easy to clean.

Though some reviews have said that they get curled up easily and do not stay flexible after it, I have never seen that problem. Having said that - I store them flat behind a microwave or another flat object to keep them flat after curling them to make a food funnel. Once again - a great buy at less than $10.

Architec The Gripper 10-by-14-Inch Bamboo Cutting Board

Architec The Gripper 10-by-14-Inch Bamboo Cutting Board

The board is made from bamboo, but unlike some wooden boards, it stays securely in place because of the addition of soft rubber feet. It is a made from laminated strips of bamboo, very earthy in design and stronger than a wood cut. These also are not just good for cutting but they are attractive enough for serving foods on as well, especially if you want to create a  Asian-type meal. It is very affordable and lightweight.

A word of warning though - it is too thin for some users, making them think that it is prone to warping. You can prevent it from bending by not carrying heavy loads on it though. Some think that this is not a primary cutting board, but serves as a secondary board for sushi and other light items. Overall, this is a great product considering the cheap price.Less than $15 for a wooden board makes it another good value product.
