Top 6 LED Desk Lamps | Reviews of Good Picks for 2015

Updated on January 29, 2015

6 of the Best LED Desk Lamps: A Few Reviews

The desk lamp is a ubiquitous fixture in most offices and homes. A typical example uses a conventional incandescent or fluorescent light bulb, but these are not always the best choice. LED desk lamps are a new alternative desk light solution that has a lot of upside.

LED lights are great for a wide variety of reasons. They're growing in popularity due to their low power draw, durability and economy, and as technology improves they are getting more affordable. We are getting to the point where we are seeing LED lights showing up in the home and becoming common.

This article is all about the best LED desk lamps and reviews. We will be taking a look at six of the best LED desk lamps on the market today (in this humble author's opinion). We'll also talk a bit about the pros and cons of an LED desk lamp and why you might choose one over a conventional model.

Why good quality LED desk lamps blow the competition out of the water

LED lights offer significant advantages over incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, and I've listed a few important ones here.

  1. Low Power Requirements:

The best LED desk lamps have a big advantage over competitors in terms of low power requirements. As it stands right now, LED desk lights use far less power than incandescent bulbs. They are roughly on par with fluorescent bulbs, but as the technology improves that seems likely that LED lamps will surpass fluorescents soon too. Every little bit counts, and a low drawing LED light for your desk or office can make a big difference over time.

  2. Long Life:

LED bulbs have an incredible lifespan. They don't have the same filaments that incandescents have, and they don't create a great deal of heat, so that means they last a very long time. An LED light bulb is more expensive, true, but it also lasts 10 to 20 times longer than a conventional light source.

  3. High Light Quality:

The light produced by the best LED desk lamps is among the best out there. Since LEDs are easy to alter, you can get both warm and cold light from them, and there is no 'flicker' like you get from fluorescent light tubes.

  4. Compact and Portable: Light emitting diodes are pretty small, each one can be as small as a grain of rice. That means that a desk light with LED bulbs can be really small, compact and attractive. Why clutter up your precious desk space with a huge lamp? Keep it low profile with one of these guys.

Softech Natural Light LED Multi-function Desk Lamp

A smart, multi-use LED desk lamp with timer, brightness control

The Softech Natural Light LED desk lamp is really a brilliant design because it's been specifically designed for typical life uses. The visible light spectrum actually changes depending on each setting, not just the brightness. The reading setting, for example, places it at a mid range spectrum that isn't too straining on the eye, but still provides great light quality. It also has an auto timer to shut off after a certain amount of time, so it's really good for bedtime reading. It uses a tiny 10 watts of power, and the bulb will last for up to 20 years of use. That'll save you some money on bulbs!

PRISM LED Desk Lamp with Anti-Glaring Filter

An affordable, powerful LED desk lamp with touch controls

The PRISM LED TL-4300 desk lamp is another favorite of mine for a few reasons. When compared to lights with similar features, it's a total bargain at well under $100. That may be a bit more than a conventional lamp, but this one is rated to last 25 years, and uses a fraction of the energy of a similar product with a conventional bulb.

It has a neat feature where it 'folds up' into a nightlight style. It also features touch controls with 3 levels of dimming. The light is phenomenal because it's specially tuned with an anti-glare filter so it's easy on your eyes as you work or read. The fact that it has a 3 year manufacturer warranty is a nice thing too. This is one of the best desk lamps with LED features out there.

Lightblade 1500 LED Desk Light Table Lamp

Wonderful, crisp light quality, long lifespan and a great value

As recommended to me by Jessica Green (see comments below), I checked out the Lightblad by Lumiy. It's a wonderfully designed light with a huge output: 1100 'lux' provides a ton of illumination, and the light quality itself is ideal. It's very easy to read and work by, and there's little eye strain involved.

There's a capacitive 'touch' sensor (like on your smartphone) on the light's base that allows you to adjust the brightness and the 'color temperature' of the light (meaning warm or cool tones). This leaves the lines of the light itself very sleek, modern and clean. I also love how low profile and sleek the light fixture (or 'blade') itself is. It doesn't take up much space on the desk, yet provides awesome light quality. Definitely one of the better LED desk lamps I've reviewed and seen.

Z-Bar High Power LED Lamp- Metallic Black/Cool Generation 2
Z-Bar High Power LED Lamp- Metallic Black/Cool Generation 2

Super low power draw on this powerful and flexible LED desk light. Reviews prove that consumers love it, and it is fully dimmable and very attractive.

Z-Bar High Power LED Light

A high-powered LED desk lamp with 6 bulbs

The Z-Bar LED desk light is a really popular item, and for good reason: it looks amazing! Since light emitting diodes are extremely small, there's little need for a big, hefty bulb fixture.

The Z-Bar is the epitome of minimalism, using a simple bar studded with LEDs. The result is a light but very powerful light with a built-in 4 stage dimmer, which makes it a good choice for any situation.

It's one of the best LED desk lights, and it reviews extremely well as a result. The light quality it generates is on par with sunlight, and the whole thing with all six bulbs uses just 9 watts of power.

Sunter Lighting Natural Daylight Architect 2.4-Watt LED Desk Lamp, Green
Sunter Lighting Natural Daylight Architect 2.4-Watt LED Desk Lamp, Green

The Natural Daylight LED desk lamp simulates sunlight with 205 lumens of power, and it is tuned to the human eye with warm, natural light.

Natural Daylight LED Desk Lamp

Affordable LED Desk Lamp, mimics daylight

The Natural Daylight LED lamp is a cheap LED desk light with a lot of upside. It's a lot cheaper than the other desk lights I've looked at here, and it certainly isn't the most feature rich, but it's a bargain for what it does.

It's fully adjustable height-wise, and the shade itself turns 360 degrees. It's meant to simulate sunlight with 205 lumens of light, and the bulb will last for a long time. It's specifically built to reduce eye strain, and the light quality is natural and tuned to human usage. The lamp will be safe to touch even after hours of operation.

Verilux Original Natural Spectrum Desk Lamp, Adjustable EasyFlex Gooseneck, Hi/Low Switch, Optix Glare-Control Diffuser, Graphite
Verilux Original Natural Spectrum Desk Lamp, Adjustable EasyFlex Gooseneck, Hi/Low Switch, Optix Glare-Control Diffuser, Graphite

A powerful, dual brightness bulb will last for many thousands of hours, and it draws very little power. Check out the awesome light quality this great LED desk lamp provides.

Verilux Original Natural Spectrum LED Desk Lamp

One of the best affordable LED desk lamps, great reviews

I've decided to add a few reviews and increase the number from five to six. The Verilux Natural Spectrum is one of the best LED desk lamps around due to its affordability, light quality and simple, sturdy design. Reviews are positive, and this is a very feature rich product.

The key with the Natural Spectrum is that it creates a quality of light that is perfect for the human eye. The spectrum is very healthy, and based on the qualities of actual sunlight. The bright, 27 watt bulb will last for thousands of hours, and it has dual brightness settings at the touch of a button.

As a comparison, this small 27 watt bulb on its brightest setting is equivalent to a 100 watt conventional bulb. And it comes with an anti-glare shield to keep your eyes protected during use. It comes in four different colors.

HDE Mini LED Desk Light, Black
HDE Mini LED Desk Light, Black

A USB LED desk lamp for use with the computer, reading, or anything requiring a small but useful light source.

HDE Mini LED Desk Light, Black

A very small, USB powered LED Desk Lamp

OK, I know this is number seven, just consider this another bonus review! The HDE Mini LED Desk Light is a very small but extremely useful mini LED desk lamp that's powered either by battery or with a simple USB cable. That means that you can plug it in to your computer or anything that has a USB port in order to keep it powered.

It's really great if you're working on a laptop late at night, or just need a little extra illumination while reading. And considering it includes LED bulbs that can last for tens of thousands of hours, it's a real bargain. It's not going to be anywhere near as useful or powerful as any of the lamps that I've reviewed above, but it's a handy, travel friendly product that'll serve you well whether you're at home or traveling (it works great on an airplane!).

LED Bulbs: An Inexpensive Alternative

In case you don't want to buy the whole led desk lamp itself, these bulbs are a good way to convert a normal light into LED usage. I know the bulbs seem pretty expensive, but consider this: they fit into standard type light sockets, they are very durable, provide excellent light brightness, and they'll last more than ten times longer than a traditional incandescent.

You'll need to pick the color tone of the light you want. Unlike conventional light bulbs, these LED bulbs can basically be any color or tone you want. They won't be as efficient as the LED desk lamps reviewed above, but they'll still save you a lot on your power bill over time. (And they don't get hot, so there's less fire hazard.)

How do you feel about desk lamps with LED bulbs?

Really great review in Squidoo! I really these lamps and I spent a lot of time on to check out the best lamp for my small home office. In the end, I bought the Lightblade 1500 by Lumiy. Lumiy's LED desk lamp has got the same features as the Softech but is like 30 dollars cheaper.
