Floor Fans

Floor Fans - The Bladeless Concept

Today I am a looking at floor fans. Through my research I have found the following information regarding fans. If you are looking for fans, especially floor fans, then I hope some of this information will help you.

The way a fan keeps your body cool is the circulating air helps evaporate sweat from your skin. This causes a cooling affect to your body. The air movement is caused by the blades chopping at the air and pushing it forward. Fans are great for ventilation and circulating the air, maintaining a constant cooling breeze. When used with a heating or cooling source, fans are an inexpensive way to keep the air circulating for a comfortable environment.

When we talk about fans, cooling or heating, we picture a unit with two or more visible blades spinning on a motor. These come in sizes from miniature personal fans to giant industrial air movers. Four blade electric fans are the most commonly used in the household. There are floor fans, table fans, window fans, and pedestal fans that oscillate. Three types are portable fans, table fans, and box fans. Most fans come with multiple speed settings and safety options. These are the old tried-and-true cooling and heating fans that range in price from very inexpensive to thousands of dollars.

But recently a type of cooling and heating fan as emerged on the market. This type of fan is "blade-less" and has no visible blades spinning on a motor.

I conclude after some research that these new floor fans create an airflow based on the same concept as the vacuum cleaner. This "blade-less" fan also uses the same concept used on jet engines and turbochargers that takes regular airflow and through technology, multiplies that air flow considerably. The enclosed vacuum cleaner motor draws in air, and generates high velocity air flow creating the suction of the vacuum.

The energy-efficient motor is encased at the base of the floor fan unit. The motor sucks in air and applying these principles to the energy efficient motor, multiplies the air velocity and channels it out through openings in an oval or circular tube in an uninterrupted stream. Though units use air flow technology, Dyson uses the "Air Multiplier" technology of an air foil type ramp that draws air surrounding this ramp and amplifies it. "The air flows through the channel in the pedestal, through a curved path, and comes out from small 16mm slits around the frame of the fan at a 16-degree angle slope. You may think that this just causes air to blow in the shape of the surface area of a cylinder, but because of the physical laws of inducement and entrainment, this allows for the surrounding air to also become drawn in from multiple areas around the fan. In other words, picture your TV weather map; a small low-pressure region is created which actually draws the air in from behind it, like a forming tropical storm. This simultaneous push and pull of air creates a quiet, even, constant flow of cool breeze."

Reviews of people that have purchased a "blade-less" fan indicate they notice the difference between the choppy airflow of the visible fan units and the uninterrupted stream of airflow. Reviews also indicate that one drawback to this blade less fan is a noticeable increase in motor noise at higher speeds.

A few things I like about "blade-less" floor fans:

-No visible motor or spinning fan in a cage that a child can stick his/her fingers into, your hair may get caught up in, or items can fall into.

-The sleek look and design.

Dyson Air Multiplier AM07 Tower Fan

Dyson Air Multiplier AM07 Tower Fan

With Patented Air Multiplier Technology

The Dyson Air Multiplier AM07 Tower Fan is a great choice. It is a sleek looking unit and should fit in with any décor. The remote control is a great idea so you can change settings while you sit working or watching TV or chatting with family or friends. It is conveniently magnetized so it stays on the unit if you prefer. I personally prefer to keep the control within reach. The settings, both on the remote control and the unit are simple. The airflow is controlled with 10 precise settings, helping save you money on cooling bills.

The air flow that is generated by this unit is more like an outside breeze and not the gust of air that you feel when the blade type fan directly moves the air flow at you. Dyson uses an energy efficient motor that uses their patented technology to produce high velocity air flow. Air pushed out of Dyson's air foil type ramp draws surrounding air into the air flow using Air Multiplier technology amplifying the amount of air moving towards you. The air foil ramp tilts up or down and oscillates on its own center of gravity. The AM07 floor fans are 60% quieter and uses less energy than the AM02.

This unit comes with a convenient sleeper timer.

It appears very easy to clean. And, of course, the biggest point for me is the unit is "blade-less" and the motor is hidden at the bottom of the base, making this unit quite safe for children, pets, and ourselves.

This unit comes in several colors as available on Amazon. This unit is rated 4 out of 5 stars based on 40 reviews.

Vornado 184 Whole Room Tower Air Circulator, 41 Inch

Vornado 184 Whole Room Tower Air Circulator, 41 Inch

A Different Take On Oscillation

I found this Vornado 184 Whole Room Tower Air Circulator, 41 Inch on Amazon.

Vornado's "V-Flow Technology" sends a constant airflow to the whole room. The common oscillating fan moves a small section of airflow forward as it oscillates, thereby only cooling the area directly in front of the air outflow and creating waves of cooling. Instead of the vertical outlet design of the common oscillating floor fans, the Vornado staggers the vertical air outlets in a crosscut design that sends airflow to a wide area at the same time, thus does not need to oscillate. Set it in a corner and it covers most of the room in a constant flow of cooling air.

The controls on the Vornado are located on top with easy access. This unit comes with remote control.

You have to admit, there is new technology coming out of the old, tried, and true models. This gives us much more choice to find what works for each individual. Check it out.

This unit is offered on Amazon. It is rated 3.5 stars based on 96 reviews.

Dyson AM03 Pedestal Silver

Dyson AM03 Pedestal Fan

Smooth Airflow, Adjustable Height And Tilt

The Dyson AM03 Pedestal Blade-less Fan uses the patented Dyson Air Magnifier technology to create the comfortable room atmosphere you want. This floor fan does not include the heater unit.

The AM03 uses a circular loop air amplifier instead of the oval used in the Dyson Air Multiplier AM07 Tower Fan.

The sleek looking pedestal still encloses the energy efficient motor and controls at the base of the pedestal. The pedestal easily adjusts from 46 to 55 inches without having to use a clamp to secure the height.

The unit has a 360 degree rotation and oscillates 90 degrees, easily cooling an entire room. A dimmer switch control is used to precisely adjust the amount of air generated. You can also turn the oscillation on and off, and adjust air flow using the convenient remote control. The remote control has a variable air flow control, not preset, so you can set the air flow just where you want it.

This unit is rated 4 out of 5 stars based on 73 reviews.

Bladeless Fan - 12" RC Folding Adjustable Bladeless Fan with Swivel, Auto Timer, Multi-Speed, Remote Control - Tabletop or Wall

Looking For Something Smaller?

Sometimes you may desire something smaller than a floor fan. If you are looking for something smaller with the same amenities, check out the Equinox 12 inch Folding Tabletop or Wall Mountable Blade-less Fan.

This fan uses the same technology as the Tower or Floor Blade-less Fan. It uses modern technology that uses an energy efficient motor located inside the base to take in air flow, increase the velocity, and expels it into the room in a breeze like fashion. There is no air flow rush as the ring expels air flow towards you. The placement of the motor and the blade-less technology make this unit very safe for children, pets, and in general. The design of the circular tubes that expel the air also lend to easy cleaning of the unit. You have a choice to let the air flow to one area or choose the 90 degree swivel. The air ring is adjustable to expel directional air flow for your comfort.

It also folds flat for easy, convenient storage. You can control the amount of air flow either directly from the unit, or the handy remote control that controls on/off, air flow, oscillation, and handy 60 or 180 minute timer with automatic shut off. This unit blends in with any décor in the home. One last amenity for this table fan is that you can mount it on the wall if you prefer.

The Ozeri Ultra 42 inch Wind Fan - Adjustable Oscillating Tower Fan with Noise Reduction Technology is another choice for new technology on a common circulator. The Ozeri floor fans boast less noise with more air output for more comfort.

The new technology allows for a sleek design that will fit right in to any home décor.

This unit has three pre-programmed airflow patterns and three speed settings with oscillation for your specific comfort setting.

I am always looking for updated floor fans that are improved, but at the same time affordable. I like the look, space-saving design, and simplicity of the controls in this Ozeri.
